I was really tempted to change the opening, but I'm hesitant to modify the side cover since I only have one and it'd be a hassle to replace if something went wrong.

Getting closer now. I found some aftermarket arisoft bolt handles and decided to see if they might fit better.

Not having a sidkit to compare to my tomen it would only be a guess as to whether or not it would fit. I seem to recall that the kit was fairly accurate in its dimensions.

As far as I know the only metal ammo housing/magazine around came from the SidKit which isn't technically accurate, since the Steyr ammo housing and magazine were made out of plastic.
