OK... after heavy eye surgery, I'm finaly back to this thread !

Razz

Another example of a bande dessinée album hijacked by hollywood... This time, we're talking about AQUABLUE being re-used in STARSHIP TROOPERS...

AQUABLUE was successful on the french (and to a certain extend, European) market in the late 80s / early 90s. Its 4th album, titled "Corail noir" ("Black coral") was undoubtedly the most impressive of the series. At a certain point of the story, it depicts a ground assault of the Foreign Legion on a remote planet...

Well, take a look at what STARSHIP TROOPERS made of this source material... Not exactly the same but damn close, don't you think ?

Fred

Yes, you're right guys, the artist is a huge Cameron fan...

Rolling Eyes

(There's also a scene in this album that could remind of THE ABYSS)

BTW, and to asnwer joberg's question :

series : AQUABLUE
artist : VATINE (first 4 albums)
writer : CAILLETEAU (11 albums)
publisher : DELCOURT

Et voilĂ  !

Well, saw James Cameron's AVATAR teaser trailer today and I'm now pretty sure he likes AQUABLUE a lot or at least saw the 4th album and enjoyed it...

Here are 2 pages from AQUABLUE 4 compared to AVATAR screencaps...

In both universes, Earth army attacks blue Aliens using air cavalry and landmates (in the case of AVATAR, they look like ugly versions of Geof Darrow's designs for THE MATRIX trilogy), a young human joins the doomed creatures to resist invasion, the battle takes place in a jungle...

Pretty weird, don't you think ?

AQUABLUE 4 cover art (could be a good cover for the AVATAR comics adaptation) :

Oh, yes... Forgot to say that in both stories the young human falls in love with a native girl (a princess of some kind in both cases too) :

I'm pretty sure AVATAR will be worth seeing for the 3D effects and storytelling but I'm already a little disappointed by the design work... I hate plagiarism, especialy from talented people who are usualy able to create original stuff of their own.

Forgot to say there's also some landscapes and creatures inspired by Roger Dean's paintings in AVATAR...

Thanks for your great work Fred, these artists deserve far more recognition for the contribution they provide to the movie machine.

If I was the artist, I'd be in contact with my lawyer Evil or Very Mad
We have to thank Fred for his research/lack of sleep, who always discovers the similarity/sameness into some of the movies being made by the Hollywood machine.

I might just be seeing too much into this but i'm watching "Kingdom of Heaven" at the moment and Orlando Bloom just kicked over a toy horse with a rider holding a spear, reminded me of the scene with Deckard and the Unicorn. Anyone else seen this movie?

Well 'generic' was one of the words that sprang to mind while I was watching the Avatar trailer Laughing

The others were less polite.

I'm not jaded at all (at least, I like to think so) !

Razz

The problem in the case of very powerful Hollywood moguls like J. Cameron is that nobody will take the risk to tell them when they're taking wrong decisions (see what happened to the new STAR WARS trilogy) if they want to work on high profile projects such as AVATAR, needed to buid their own Hollywood career...

Most of the time the end result will suck but who cares, in most of the cases people will go to see those bad movies whatever the critics have to say about them... (marketing rules)

Regarding the work of other artists incorporated into those movies, it's been a bad Hollywood habit for years now... but they keep doing it because if you dare to attack them with your lawyer they'll send an army of their own lawyers to kick your ass whatever you have to complain about and in most of the cases they'll win.

Of f#*k, I'm jaded again !!!

Shocked

Fred

PS : Good eye with the tiny horse in KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, Neil ! Never thought of a connection with BLADE RUNNER but you might be right !

Always thought the idea was to underscore that the kid was in a way the 'horse of Troy" that would lead Bloom's character to his mother and the powerful king of Jerusalem.

I know for a fact that Lucas Film refuses to open any enveloppe containing art-work/photo/portfolio etc...for fear of law-suits. You want to work for ILM? Take an appointment with the art-dept., get an interview where you'll present your work; that way, everything in on the up and up and nobody can come back saying that so-and-so stole their idea/work.

i was stoked to see Kingdom of Heaven was a Scott Free production (how did i miss this?).

i noticed it as well (just watched it for the first time Monday) and saw a slight link but only because Ridley directed it. hmmm.

either way, ya gotta love the free movies on demand!
