Saw this 2 minutes ago...
The original prop wil be part of the next Bonham auction... The history of the prop according to Bonham isn't that clear, compared to what we know here ! (it was apparently stolen at Bob Burn's house years ago)

Nice clear photo though. I'm sure Mike wished he'd had that when he started the key. |

I wonder if we shouldnt inquire? If it was Bobs then its still his "stolen" property.

Bob should be made aware of the sale and can decide if he'll pursue the matter. |

Just had a look at the Bonhams site, very nice prop, and the AlienĀ³ Martin Asbury storyboards. I might put in a bid myself.. if I win the lottery in the next couple of weeks.
Re Mr. Burns, I guess it's now up to him to prove he owned the piece and it was stolen from him as he claims. If he can't do that, meh, it's just talk. |

I spoke to Bob about this key when it was at Prop Store. He told me at that time there was no way to prove it was the one stolen from his place. he did not have any good pictures to compair the details too.
He went on to tell me that he though only one was made but there was no way to prove they didn't have more then one. So he said there was one point in trying to make a case.
So he knows about it....
Thanks
Steve |

The auction house should still be informed IMHO. Just in case they want to avoid any controversy from the potential buyer after the sale. At least that is how I would put it

If this is the key that was in John Gorman's collection then I'm almost certain it wouldn't be the same one as Bob had as it was in the UK for a very long time and may still be.

Maybe just a little.
Oh well...

Perhaps we can try to clear this up.
Harry, what's the earliest date you can definitely place this key in the UK?
Steve, do you know when Bob's key was stolen? _________________ Mike

I started working at Alien War on September 6th 1993 and was probably doing pre-production visits about 2 months before that so that would be early July possibly. I knew John had the key since I met him which would have been around that time too (early July 1993).
Hope that helps,

Thanks Harry. Steve?
Now, back to the 'replacement' key.
Last time you saw it there was a layer of resin and the etched pieces. Next step was to add the flat, laser-cut parts.
Then in went the more solid items - capacitors, blocks etc.
And once dry, out it came!
Note the pen-marks for where the magnets go.
The open side of the mould needs smoothing down to remove excess around the edges. This is done on a milling machine. And here it is with the upper surface milled flat.
Obviously it looks less transparent now, but that will be fixed with some fine sanding and polishing, followed by a coat of lacquer to seal everything.
To ease the process of making the handle, Colin made moulds of the dowelling pieces necessary.
Resin copies will be more secure once glued to the resin.
More photos as they come. _________________ Mike

OUTSTANDING MIKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
quick update on Bob's real key. Here is what he had to say:
"Hi Steve,
Kathy and I have been trying to remember when we noticed that the key
was gone. I got it in 1979 so we now think it was possibly 1985. I
didn't have it mounted on the cabinet as yet as we had just built on
the museum section to the house. Even though we weren't doing
Halloween shows after the Creature in 1982 we were still having folks
show up just to celebrate Halloween. Many of our friends would bring
other people that we didn't know. The Muther box was sitting on a
shelf in the museum. I hadn't looked into the box until around that
time and found that the key was missing.
I'm not sure if you know that there were at least two keys made. There
could have been more. Usually with a prop like that they always made
extras in case one broke. etc. So, the one you know of could have been
one of those. I would doubt if mine got out of the States. I'm sure
it's sitting on someone's shelf by now.
I hope that clears up some of the mystery. What really bothers us is
that who ever took the key had to be a friend of one of our friends
that came over. I guess there are some folks you just can't trust. "
So there you have it.
Now back to Mike increadable work!! |
