Here's the first casting of the Receiver. The engraving is much easier to see in these photos.

I think the term they use over at the RPF is "Prop Porn"! _________________ Dave

Beautifully realized.
Also, lays waste to the endless excuses about "garage kits" necessarily being junky, or less clean than a mass-market piece. |

Wow! To top off the incredible work on the gun, and casting, you throw in some very nice photography to boot. Love that blue back lighting. All around superb job.

Dave, more than anything I REALLY appreciate you sharing your information on mold design and creation, and how you actually cast an object from the molds... for far too long this has somehow been kept as some sort of arcane secret, lest the unwashed masses somehow discover the principals behind this art and start mass producing their own objects and thereby cut into the profits of a select few.
Seriously, if we all had access to our own vacuum chambers. the time and the money to replicate all the pieces we'd like to be able to reproduce, then yeah artists such as yourself might be a bit nervous... but the simple fact is that the vast majority of us do not possess the artistry, the skill, the talent nor the technical expertise to do what you do. I'm fairly confident after watching your tutorial I could build a two piece mold and cast an object... but I still couldn't replicate your snubby.
Thanks again for sharing!

I shouldn't admit this but the fancy photography is really a very simple accident. I just put the blaster down on a sheet of white styrene under the worklight on my bench. It's one of those combination incandescent/florescent desk lamps. There's also soft daylight coming in through the garage door. I shoot in RAW mode without worrying about the correct white balance (since the light is actually a combination of incandescent/florescent/daylight it's a real mess anyway). The resulting picture is a really ugly color.
But it's a simple one-click fix to reset the color balance of the phoho to make the background white, which makes the shadow area (which is the daylight)... blue! _________________ Dave

I'm hoping to raise the standards of what can be done with a "garage" kit. Anyone that treats these techniques as secrets is just doing themselves, and the hobby, a disservice.
But I'm not too worried about being put out of business by the competition! _________________ Dave

There's not going to be a "list". When I've got the first couple dozen kits completely ready to go (cast, packed and boxed), I'll post them for sale in the Prop Shop and also over at the RPF. Don't worry, I will make as many kits as I can sell. I didn't go to all this effort to make a "limited edition"!
I'll never take money for something I don't have ready to ship. I've seen too many of these deals go bad over at the RPF. Someone takes payments for a kit that "almost ready", then one delay after another happens and a year later the money's spent and people are still waiting for their kits. My "day job" could get in the way of working on the kit, as it did earlier this summer when I went on location for nearly three months and all work stopped.
Even though the blaster castings are mostly done, there are still a couple of things left to cast. The biggest of which are the clear grips. The mold is ready but they have to be cast in the pressure tank, which is in use right now with the other parts (I'm building a second pressure chamber but it won't be ready in time for use on this project). Unlike the grey resin which can be demolded in about 30 minutes, the clear resin takes 5 to 6 hours to cure. I can only get one, maybe two pours a day. So I am at least a few weeks out from having everything cast.
I am as anxious to get the Snubbies out into your hands as you all are! _________________ Dave
