An almost final rendition of the station by artist Roy Cannon, who painted many illustrations for the Art Dept...

I have sourced almost by accident the bubble helmet used on the PARIS MATCH cover discussed earlier in this thread...
It's a "rain dome" created by italian designer Emilio Pucci for BRANIFF airways' hostesses. It was part of their hostess uniform in the mid-60's.
It was later nicknamed "Space Bubble" by the crews !

Well, for that price it's fairly cheap (50+pics and the Paris-Match)...and now we know the size of the mag (unless they kept it at the normal size) TFS Fred. |

Cool stuff here. Gotta get out more often . . .
Took a break and rebuilt the Paris MATCH cover for SKIN JOB 66.
Thought I'd post it here for general consumption. Hope you like it.

Returning to the topic and to a comment touched on earlier -
Indeed, as JOBERG confirmed, the B&Ws are of the discarded remnants of Space Station V, lost forever.
It's sad that so many memorable models have been lost or intentionally destroyed. Of course, over the last few years, as studios have discovered their worth, many have been auctioned. And while most fans cannot afford the astronomical prices, at least some of these pieces have been saved. Whether or not they are truly valued or will ever see daylight again . . . (?)
Several years ago, I stumbled upon a blog with the story revealing the fate of the model. It was the first time I saw the sad photos posted here. Perhaps this has been quoted elsewhere on PS, but I thought it worthy of repeating here. -
It was reported that Kubrick destroyed all the models after principal photography ended for 2001 - for fear of a sequel or the models being used in lesser productions. Apparently that report is not entirely correct -
Slightly edited from www.cinematography.com -
Frederick Ordway (technical/scientific advisor to Kubrick) said that almost all of the props were destroyed. While there was a plan to donate all of it to the Smithsonian, Kubrick felt uncomfortable about it - he felt that it might destroy the illusion of the film for viewers.
HOWEVER - Trevor Parsons wrote:
"I was at college in Stevenage (about 15 miles away from St Albans in the early 1970's). Our studio . . . faced the entrance to the local corporation dump. One afternoon in 1974 a truck turned up after the dump was closed & left some crates in the entrance way. They contained 2 of the models used in 2001, the space wheel & one of the pods . . . . I believe they were genuine (the film had been made about 20 miles away at Boreham Wood - the old MGM studios).
By the time I got there the pod had been taken, the space wheel damaged & taken out its wooden case. I took pictures of it, its surface had been covered with bits of old plastic construction kits to make it look more technical when filmed . . . It was smashed up by kids a few days later."
He stated that reluctantly he had left it, not having any place to store it . . .

Regarding the Russian Shuttle -
I had seen this kit some time ago. Resin, simple 5-piece construction. At 1/144 scale, roughly the same as Moebius's Orion Shuttle (1/160). Found an image online, but I'm unsure if it's still available. Its only vendor, Starship Modeler, lists it as "Out of Stock".
More pics here: http://www.starshipmodeler.biz/shop/index.cfm/product/1498_20/ilyushin-titov-c.cfm
Although 66's earlier entry lists it as the Lupulov, the kit calls it the Titov V or C. Perhaps, as mentioned early in the sequel "2010", Russian leaders fall from favor, hence the name change . . . However there do seem to be some subtle differences in the cockpit area and the markings shown on the box art.
Either way, it might be an interesting addition to a collection if you can obtain one.

No doubt many here know this, but another member mentioned being at ILM when Lucas shut down the model shop. A sad day. Apparently several models were destroyed there as well . . . such a waste.

Well, the Death Star was saved (less the radar dish, removed to put lighting in it a-la-Disco-ball )...in private hands and restored. |

Another very interesting article posted at www.clothesonfilm.com and this time about 2001 !!!
They have linked a documentary about the costumes Hardy Amies designed for the film :
http://clothesonfilm.com/2001-and-hardy-amies-when-fashion-and-film-collide/28856/
It's very interesting... However, I was really shocked and pissed-off (there's no other word) by the fact that the work of french Haute Couture creator André Courrèges is NEVER mentioned in this documentary... but as you can see in the photos displayed below, it's obvious his work was THE main influence on Hardy Amies' creations for 2001 !
Fred
BTW the brand was resurrected a year ago, they're going to remake all the original clothes in their original colors and textures !!!
Their site is here :
http://www.courreges.com/
This is one of the dresses that can be purchased at the online shop :

TFS Fred...you're so right about the big influence Courrège had on H.Amies and the final design of the clothes. Also, in the world of Prêt-à-Porter it`s somewhat difficult to pinpoint with accuracy who-did-what-and-when When you see the fashion in England of the "Swinging '60s" and the Italian designers of the time also (Sarli House in Rome or Cesare Guidi in Florence) you'll see a lot of similatities with Courrège and others.
Btw, Sharen Davis (costume designer for "Looper") took the '30s and '60s fashion for her base: you can see that the men's jackets (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) are with no lapels, Neru collar...as in "2001 ASO" Lots of new designs, for men especially (the slim fit look) are a return to those type of '60s look. |

Well you know JB, Courrèges wasn't part of that trend, he simply was here at the beginning and created it... His "Space Age" collection was released in 1964...
A link to the english version of the Wikipedia page devoted to André Courrèges, for those who'd like to know more about him and don't read french :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/André_Courrèges
Another one, also in english, that leads to the fashion model directory :
http://www.fashionmodeldirectory.com/designers/andre-courreges/
Enjoy !
