That's beautiful. Amazingly beautiful. I'm sure that it's beyond my limited sewing abilities to attempt. Have you ever considered coming to LA and doing costuming for the movies for real? I'm sure it's easier said than done, but that is screen-quality work, Rachael. I've seen worse crafting on real movie costuming on display at FIDM at their Oscar exhibit every year.

The pattern "package" will come with some photo instructions, especially for the collar as it truly ties the rest of the BR Trench together. |

Many thanks for all the compliments! I have refined my skills by sewing for finicky actors...
Speaking of which, I came home from a fashion show today to find one such snoozing on my sofa wearing the trenchcoat. So I guess that's a stamp of approval, but if he starts sleeping with it, it might get interesting.
As to Hollywood, one thing on my list of things to do before I go is costume a film. It would have to be long distance though; no moving to California for me. All that sun really gets me down. Maybe when LA is always dark and raining I'll consider it. What, another 12 yrs 'til 2019 right? _________________ Is this testing whether I'm a Replicant or a lesbian, Mr. Deckard? |

Hey, it's not always sunny here, y'know! In fact you would have loved yesterday and today...really overcast, we got rain during the night, the air was breatheable.
Any time you and OnceBitten want to visit, let me know and I'll give you two the tour. Here's the overview: http://www.msgeek.com/brtour/ .
Have a better one...

OK...a FINAL round of pics before Rachael moves on to The Black Dress Thread.
These were taken in full sunlight which I really don't think is someplace this Trench should ever be seen.
When we are ready for Halloween we will put up some shots taken at night.
Enjoy!

Thanks Andy!
We are discovering little things that we would like to change or "Accurize" but that probably won't happen until AFTER Halloween. |

Stunning! That's just some beautiful craftsmanship.
The details look superb, and the entire ensemble is amazing!
I think it looks better than the Abbyshot!! _________________ I find your lack of faith disturbing. . . |

Thanks Super! I keep telling Rachael that but she won't admit it in print...something about having an un-fair advantage because she's NOT mass producing the B.R. Trench to turn a buck.
At most she's doing two or three for die-hard B.R. Fans such as yourself which let's her pay attention to the much needed detail and to do it right...
More soon! |

My name is Alan Cross and I just joined this website. Rachael, I have to chime in and agree that your version of the Deckard Trench Coat looks more luxurious and of a much higher quality than the Abbyshot version. (I don't mean to diss the Abbyshot coat -- a lot of work has obviously gone into making it.)
So I HAVE to ask the BIG QUESTION: Is it possible you could make me a Blade Runner trench coat using the same material and color like the one Once-Bitten is wearing in the photos?
I've wanted a Blade Runner trench coat ever since I first saw the movie and this would be a dream come true.
The SECOND BIG QUESTION: If you are willing to make me a coat, how much would you charge?
Thanks, Rachael!
Best wishes,
Alan |

Thanks, Alan!
I've always loved creating and re-creating costumes from film and history, and this project was especially fun because I had to watch BR several times a day for a few weeks while making it. Having it playing in the background while I was constructing worked a bit like osmosis, really, and the atmosphere of the film seeped in.
In the case of a film that uses historical costumes I feel I may be cheating a bit, since I've spent so many years doing historical repros. A lot of techniques fall by the wayside, and unless you've read the trade maunuals from the era, it's not easy to figure out how they did that. I am certain this is true in any trade, including the blasters and other props that are so well reproduced by others on this board.
While I have been known to take on special projects, I do try to limit them due to my own time constraints and also to keep the things I love from being 'work'. _________________ Is this testing whether I'm a Replicant or a lesbian, Mr. Deckard? |

Hmm. . . dress maker speak. . . is that anything like city-speak? _________________ I find your lack of faith disturbing. . . |

Nah. Dress-maker speak is closer to gibberish than City-speak.
Speaking of which, I have begun work on a new trench, this one in oil cloth instead of canvas. Also, I'm tweaking a few details to get closer to the original.
This time I'm trying to get as close as possible to the coat as seen in the final fight with Roy. There are some pretty clear shots which contradict each other, so I'm going with the thought that there were at least two versions made. Of course, any major production involves several copies, especially when a garment is being pre-soaked for rain scenes. _________________ Is this testing whether I'm a Replicant or a lesbian, Mr. Deckard? |

Yay! Very cool.
Two versions, eh? That's interesting. In your opinion, what would be the reason for differences in detail? I know they make stunt props for action scenes. Do they sometimes make stunt costume pieces as well?
I'd think for such an important wardrobe piece if they made multiple copies, they'd try to make them as close to identical as they could. _________________ I find your lack of faith disturbing. . . |

I'll take a shot here and point out what Rachael pointed out to me.
Identical in LOOK, yes...Identical in WEIGHT, no...
In the final scene with Roy on the roof-top Deckards Trench obviously has no lining in it. There are at least a couple of times where you can see right through it which you would not have been able to do if the lining was there.
Think of all the weight Ford would have had to lug around in action sequences if they had left the lining in for shot's where the trench is soaking wet...
Not that Rachael is planning on leaving the lining out of her trench...She's talking mainly about the change in material being actual trench-coat material.
