Yes, this is an older post and discussion also, but since my V.K. debacle and the frustration of trying to make a working prop ...well, I simply wasn't in the mood for building anything anymore; that's right, I was done with this particular machine and props in general.
So after all this time, I cleaned what I had and built what I had.
I'll post more pics as it draw near completion and yes: this is the closest V.K. from the original prop (1st machine built by Michael Fink, not the one made with the U.K. video screen).
That's why I put it here so we can compare it to the pics Nick and Bwood had posted a long time ago it seems, but for me it's like a re-birth of some kind, not only the re-birth of a favorite if elusive prop, but also for me it's back at building props once again

Thanks guys A word about accuracy: it's a static piece and therefore not accurate (also some of the measurement and scale are a little off).
Is it the closest to the other V.Ks. found on the web (including the one I sold to Propsjonnyb)? Yes it is Cool I think we had that discussion before, but short of the real thing, it's only a close interpretation...maybe after building this one, I'll build another until I come close to the real machine.

Thanks Noeland and thanks Nick for that big pic from Bwood, yes I wish his friend would've taken the time to publish more pics...
In the mean time: back to the build.
Little details that eluded us for so long, specially in the "trench".

Much more to do/to come...so stay tuned

Sorry guys, that's all I've got. He who gave me those pictures is out of the VFX business at the present, and attending college back east to get his masters..

O.k. here's one of the missing pic and the transformation I did on one part of the machine. Since Nick blew-up Bwood's pic to a bigger size, I noticed to things:
1) The 2 "arms" produding from the rear of the machine seems hollow, something I hadn't seen on previous pics.
Hollow because the eye of the main arm has to fit inside the trench and the other part ot the said arm has to follow suit; that's why this part has now been transformed.
2) Looking at the machine from the rear, I noticed that the left hand side part (near the base of moving arm/eye) is also hollow. I believe it was done that way as to try to cram the electronic components behind that arm. When you see the machine's innards, it's pretty crowded in there.
I will not hollow that part, since it's a static prop and that that move couldn't make the arm move better anyway.

this is the old design.

this is now the new hollow design...more to come of course Wink

I was wondering if any of you have a good pic of the metal part of the arm...I think that it's full of little machined circles on the aluminium part?

Another challenge of course is the arm...here's the beginning

More to come as I affix the pullies on top of the arm Wink

That finish on the aluminum is known as 'jeweled' and is quite common. Looks like you've got it down.

Thanks Bwood, I used metallic tape and sandpaper (180 grit) to achieve the "look"...I think it's looking good since I didn't have machined alu to do the arm Wink

That arm is giving me grief Confused I had to hollow the part at the end near the main black box to make it pivot better. Now I'm trying to figure a way to make the entire eye piece turn toward the machine and then pivot again to fit into the trench, making it easier to transport (sleeker too).

Thanks guys, it's really appreciated. I'm taking a little break from the construction of the arm. I'll spend the next few days drawing the eye and building a mock-up to make sure everything fits...more to come for sure
