Tom,
I love these storyboards and drawings inspired by Moebius you have posted just above... These copies you have look pristine, lucky you ! (and it's the first time I see this panel of the opening sequence with Deckard portrayed by Dustin Hoffman, didn't even know it existed, thanks again for sharing these great visuals !)
OK, as promised more on Moebius when he used to live in the South West of France...
When I was looking for images of his home in Castet, I stumbled on a photo of him at the time he had just completed work on TRON and also Les Maîtres du Temps with René Laloux...
The photo was taken in Castet. It shows Moebius at work, doing a sketch of his son Julien who was the main inspiration for the main character in LMDT, at least that's what the article where this photo was taken said...
Now if you look on the wall near Moebius you'll spot a poster... It was drawn by himself. Saw that one in person in Pau where it was (locally) released. It was a poster for the first ever Jazz festival in Oloron (a small town near Pau), featuring musicians such as Michel Portal or Archie Shepp. I guess Moebius accepted to draw this poster because as you may know, he was a huge Jazz fan. The festival still exists but it's no longer called "Ciguri Jazz Festival". (Yep, it was an homage to Moebius' Le Garage Hermétique where the Major's own spaceship bears the name "Ciguri")
More soon...

I can't merge threads, only split and delete posts. They would have to be reposted there or in a new thread.
BTW I love coming here every day, and seeing stuff I have never seeen before, but have longed to get a glimpse at for years.

Skin job 66,
Thanks for the pictures above. I just found these today. Like you and the
gang (fans of BR), I have combed the work of Moebius, and bought
everything I could find and studied with magnifiers to get the best possible
look at his world. What a mind. And what a hand the master had.
Thanks again.

You're very welcome, Tom !
Oh yes, I also have bought everything I could find from Moebius since the late 70's and cherished them all these years ! I don't know if you have this one but the last book he did that really blew my mind was his last Masterpiece 4O DAYS DANS LE DESERT "B" (Stardom, 1999) ! This one is a must have I personally consider equal to Le Garage Hermétique !
OK, back to the late 70's / early 80's in the South West of France...
I already shared that poster Moebius drew for a Jazz festival, but he also did a drawing for a folk band named Los deu Larvath that was finally used as a poster. The name "Los deu Larvath" is Occitan for "Those from the Valley of Laà", a place between the towns of Pau and Orthez...
This is not the finest work he has produced but it's very rare... I was able to secure one of these, I still have it somewhere...
A last thing I wanted to share...
When I was looking for photos of his home in Castet, I stumbled on a photo of him at work on L'INCAL... The photo was taken in Castet, yes, but a toy displayed on his drawing table immediately caught my attention : A little robot named "Tonto" that was one of the main characters of the SAN KU KAI tv show. this japanese show was very popular among french kids in the early 80's, it had a "Star Wars meets Captain Harlock vibe" that most of them loved. My brother had the very same toy, I still have it... It's one of the very few toys that survived our childhood, and it's in not so bad shape, considering its age ! (photo on the left)
Anyhow, Moebius turned it into a background character in the first INCAL book ! (Look in the last panel of the B&W page displayed just below)
I guess it could have been one of his son's toys he used on that book because he liked its shape... and maybe also to please his kid ?

Thanks for sharing Fred...great Moebius tangent here...lots of material to see and admire for sure and since you're a specialist on Bandes Dessinées, it's great to see your enthusiasm for the artist and its work.
Love the Incal album (I have the whole collection )and I return to them quite often. |

Skin Job 66,
Thanks for those pix and the story. It gets me closer to the artist I'm so
fond of. Speaking of toys, on his drawing board, he had a little artist in a
chair at a drawing table perhaps 2 or 3 inches tall that was based on one
of his drawings ( probably him). He said it was a one- up sent by a fan.
I wanted one immediately .
The forty days book... I think I have that. I'll go look. Small, horizontal,
Single pen drawing on each page, very trippy, magic mushroom images,
All in the desert. I'll go look.
My copy is in French but almost no text at all.
I'll get back to you.
Hey, don't stop. I can't get enough of M.

Thanks Fred; when I see Moebius's sweater in the pic, it almost looks like Deckard's in the car with Rachael going into the sunset
Du tac au tac is translated "tit for tat" in English: very similar as you can see. Comes from the old French "tipe (blow) + pour + tape" an equivalent given in return (as for an injury). The old English version is "tip for tap". |

Thanks a lot JB for the translation !
OK, I wanted to post photos of Moebius and his weird pullovers...
It looks like he was wearing this kind of things all the time in the early 80's... I think they were made by someone who knew him well (his wife Claudine maybe ?) because if you look close you can spot weird things like flying saucers drawn in the wool like in this photo...
See ?

There's also this one... No flying saucer this time but strange geometrical shapes that remind me of... folded paper boats ???
It looks like Moebius really LOVED it because these photos were taken from different books published circa 1980 / 1982 :
- Upper left was taken in Castet
- Upper right was taken in Paris (don't know where)
- The other three were taken at METAL HURLANT offices in Paris
Haircuts or shirts differ from one photo to another (excepted for the last three of course), this to say these were not taken the same day... (and it's the first time I do detective work related to pullovers !)
BTW did you see the cover of the DUNE stroyboards drawn for Jodorowsky's ill-fated film project ? My next post will show some of them, at least what looks like an opening sequence of some kind...

Skin Job 66,
Thank you. These are great.
I feel I should draw a strip in the Moebius style based on these shots.
Would you mind?
This (pullovers) fits perfectly with his house of " Moebius Blue".
I did have a few Moebius like marks in BR that you can't see in the film,
Like an Arzak crest on the Megatrans bus. And perhaps a few others.
I told M. and he didn't seem to mind.

Great info once again !!!
IIRC I've spotted an extra that looked like Major Grubert in one of the DVD featurettes (dressed with a silver suit, coat and hat). The other obvious reference to Major Grubert I've spotted is the little Kaiser replicant in J.F. Sebastian's apartment... The helmet with the spike on top... Hmm... Definitely Grubert !

You're welcome (translation) and thanks Fred for those pics Yes, his favorite pull-over was the one with the folded paper boats...
Tom, now I'm going to look even more closely at the movie (or pics of the movie) to see those Moebius-like drawings in BR.
And yes, great idea for the drawings: eager to see them |

Well, he loved it so much that he even drew it, but the paper boats were turned into crowns... Much more adequate for the then "Sun King" of Bande Dessinée !
I also have found (almost by accident) more photos of his time in Castet :

Et voilà !

Thanks Fred.
I'm always interested in Moebius.
I'll dig to see if I have something to counter with.
