Great research on the cap, Dave... Can't wait to see your next posts...

Nice job finding the cap visor on its own, looking forward to seeing your version of the cap. Dont fall into the same trap that many, including myself fell into, the patch on the cap, I always thought it was the dark one as seen in the famous pic just before the Alien strikes Brett but its the lighter blue officers one. You probably already knew it but I thought, just in case. _________________ Formerly offworld66 |

Thanks OffWorld. Yes I knew . . .or thought I did. From what I've gathered here, with Ridley at the helm, there is no right or wrong, only change, and that sometimes led to continuity problems. Although Brett's patch seems to have the lighter blue-gray background at center in the stills as well as in the movie, as you said, it was switched at least once for the close-up when he faces the alien - no doubt so that it would read better to the audience.
As most here knew (and Tom Southwell confirmed), Ridley was always been notorious for changing things. Tweaking. Improving.
However, I do plan to stick with the lighter gray center, unlike the darker patch used on my old Thinking Cap version.

The "close-up cap" logo is photo paper with the logo: they discovered real fast that the embroided logo was too strong for the gag to work. The extended teeth were to go though the logo (they made a hole in the cap) and into the false head...paper worked better, but the colour were off |

Yea, Joberg. You can tell by looking at how glossy the patch appears, no doubt the result of a layer of plastic or possibly the tape adhering it to the cap . . .
Methods were so crude back then, it's a wonder they did such amazing work.

Dave, the photo paper used was a glossy finish (water and other stuff present for the gag). I'm sure that a few line made by a razor blade would rip the logo in a few pieces also |

I know a lot had to be improvised on the spot, moreso back then. With Ridley it seems much was and is "done on the fly".
Makes me wonder if even the flatter patches, more recently produced, are that far off from the attack version.

Sorry Dave, didn't understand "flatter patches, more recently produced".
You meant in terms of colour? |

Actually, no. I recently ordered a couple of patches from Intergalactic. I had done so years ago, back in the Thinking Cap days. As you know, back then patches were not quite as "perfect" and much heavier, with thicker stitching that sometimes tended to snag a thread or two.
Now, while Intergalactic claims to be selling the same "original" vintage patches, while they are cleaner - tighter and more perfect stitch-for-stitch - they are almost flat (lacking any dimension), with a less organic look and feel. Online pictures can't reveal this, but there is an obvious difference.
If that doesn't matter, that's your choice, but if you think you're getting the old, cotton-threaded TC variety . . . BUYER BEWARE! .

O.k. gotcha and thanks for the FYI (I do prefer the old stitching myself). |

I bought this in 1979/80 and thought I had lost it. However, it turned up after last being seen in 1985!! Still in good condition but the peak needs reshaping.
Hope this posts OK...
