|
|
http://tenshu53.exblog.jp/19949047/
"For the grip color, we used something in between the pale color from the previous Tomenosuke Blaster PRO assembly kit (called "piss yellow" by some people at Prop Summit), and the deep colors of the Tomenosuke Blaster PRO Hero Model released in 2010. That IS Extremely close to the grip color of the Tomenosuke Blaster OG Released in 2008.
This IS a good Opportunity for me to explain why we made the assembly kit's grip color a Pale One. As There Are, from the outset, various Approaches to grip color, we USED the Pale color from the kit Which CAN BE ACCORDING Adjusted to personal preference. That Is not the point of a kit?
It SHOULD come as no surprise, as this color Pale WAS Widely Considered by Japanese Fans Blaster to the BE best color for grips made to date."
Dye it yourself to taste... It never would have occurred to me. |

Thanks for the info Karl.
Interesting speel there about the grip colour.
About time they come up with a grip colour close to the hero
gun for the multi-production releases...would be cool.
Dying the kit grips to suit... not really something
I would have liked to do, unless really required to. |

So is the Retailer the most accurate? or is it chasing rainbows because of so many ways to see this color or was there aging issues with the color by the time Worldcon occured? |

I don't think the color aged at all on the real Hero/Worldcon. Pretty stout material they used on the grips. |

Color is extremely subjective and dependent on the color temperature of the film, lighting, et cetera when pictures or film is taken. In Star Trek, for decades people thought Captain Kirk's shirt was yellow or gold, when in fact it is a light green that verges on yellow.
V's mask in V for Vendetta is white, although the color temperature of the movie makes it look pale yellow.

Just looking at your Worldcon pics now there is so much how lighting impacts how deep the color can be or angle of view given the dark innards as well. |

Hmmm.......
Was there anything in the instructions about custom colouring the grips that came with it?
This is the first I've heard of it.
At least if goes some way to explaining the very light yellow colour.
I'm still planning to get the replacement grips run done. I'm certainly going to replace mine with a darker amber/rum colour. |

I reckon they got the colour way off the mark, but were too late...let the production pieces through. Doubt they were thinking of kit buyer's discretion to change the colour... lame excuse. |

Sorry if I'm a bit slow, but are you planning to offer amber grips that will fit the new tomenosuke kit?? _________________ Monsieur, azonnal kövessen engem bitte

I don't want to derail this.
I am planning a replacement grips set which fit the Pro assembly kit. I don't know if this new kit will be the same fitting, but I expect so.
I'll post when I'm closer..
Back to the discussion.

I did some research on color perception and found that not only is color subjective, but it can also be cultural. Much like certain concepts are not even considered by the brain without words to describe them, many cultures will combine colors into similar words, and at one time the color we call pink was considered yellow. Artists and those that work with color will also see subtle variations in color while most people will just ignore colors they do not use in context to their lives. Artists also can look at the a series of photos in different lighting conditions and make adjustments automatically for the lighting changes and will be able to perceive the color more accurately by the ambient lighting around the object.
In Karl's photos he used grey cards and color corrected much of the photos, so what we saw in those pics was pretty accurate, and it was the artists among that called foul on the grip color, so I trust our instincts here. Especially since we all had seen so many different photos of the grips to cross compare to. All I can say is that I tried the lighter grips in different lighting conditions and it never seemed to "feel" right to me. It may have been that I had preconceptions of the color combining the darker film photographs, and maybe even had an emotional connection to the deeper colored grips with a desire to see them more tortoise shelled like Rick Ross's original grips. Whatever the psychology behind it, the light amber grips never seemed right, and the "Piss yellow" label seemed to stick.
I do feel the difference between the new color and and the previous kit color is very minute, but it does make it much more aesthetically pleasing to me at least. Small details are what this serious collectors are about, and it is probably just a way to keep an isolated topic interesting for 30+ years I will apologize for any hurt feelings there may have been, but not for expressing my honest opinions and observations. When it comes to this stuff too I would happily be proven wrong as well, but know I am happy to see that our humble little group has been listened to, and had an influence. Now to find the money to purchase one of these

A little background on myself.
25 plus years in advertising as an illustrator / art director /graphic designer.
harkening back to my school day's in color composition101
Take 2 neutral gray squares of the SAME color.
Place them next to each other.
Place a red color square on the right side of the two gray squares.
Place a blue color square on the left side of the two gray squares.
Your brain will make the gray square next to the red square look slightly red.
Your brain will make the gray square next to the blue square look slightly blue.
You KNOW that BOTH gray squares are the same neutral gray.
This is called color cast.
Keep it in mind when your after just the RIGHT color for your blaster grips. _________________ "No choice pal,..."

One of the changes in the Retailer edition is a subtle modification to the shape of the grip frame and buttplate. So it is not a given that grips made for previous versions will necessarily fit.

And yes, the grip color is highly variable due to lighting and ambient color temperature (incandescent vs daylight, for example). I tried to color correct my blaster photos at the time, but there is still variation due to if the flash fired, etc. |

As ocd said, careful of what your mind/eyes are looking at (or believe to be looking at) Do your grips like you love them to be; everything else is academic. |

Personally I would prefer something darker than the "piss yellow" grips... I really don't like them.
I don't know if this is off topic, if it is, I will of course move it to a new thread... But how would one technically go about changing the colour of the grips from - lets's say - a lighter to a darker tone? _________________ Monsieur, azonnal kövessen engem bitte |

I think that one RPF member did quite the experiment with the grips and came up with the "right amber colour" by using...wait for it: a red Sharpie
...but it worked! |
