This is only a mock-up of the case (info about it are sketchy at best).
Insulation foam was used and latex paint will be applied later.
First half (the bottom of the case in the movie).
To the trained eyes I made a mistake: the big long vertical part is suppose to be on the left hand side when the bottom of the case is sitting on Tyrell's table I'm trying to see what kind of medium I can use and I think that MDF would be better than foam...but I'm trying |

Thanks mate...lots to do on that one; I still don't know what kind of finish I'll put on that (maybe a spray you use to protect metal from rust...we'll see) |

Well, here I am again with the case. I've found a rubberized finish (no it's not Plasti-Dip; it's been discontinued in Canada ) but it smells like asphalt(the GF doesn't like it ).
Still lots of work to be done, but at least the 2 sides are done.
I was also thinking that the case is a sort of portable batterie unit, I mean how is the V.K. powered? I don't see it as a plug-in type of machine.
So when the machine is in the case it's beeing recharged via the batterie unit that we see from the outside also (big long piece accross the width of the case).
I'm going to dress the inside also with all the details that case needs...stay tuned
And one last one.

This project is on again (probs with the plastic paint; the store stopped carrying it for a while ).
The interior has to be finished and the V.K. placed in it for the last "Kodak moments".

Well, part of the V.K. is fitting fine inside the foam; I'll have to shape the other side of the case as to make sure the small monitors are protected as well as the big housing, the baffles and of course the arm at the back.

Looking good joberg.
Are you still planning to make an MDF version?

Thanks Colin I'll probably make one in MDF in the future (I'll have to buy a table saw to cut the small pieces)...I'll probably will sell the V.K. (not sure yet and depending on the interest; maybe an "auction" on Propsummit?) |

Excuse the delayed emotional response.
Always amazed with what you come up with!
I didn't see any comment regarding this, but with all the work involved, have you considered building a prototype- a form (MDF?) on which to vacuum-form pieces? I assume there might be some company up there or someone on The Summit here who knows of a company that could pull the basic shapes of the two halves at least(?) You'd have to allow for details like material thickness in the build, but perhaps selling a couple might recover some of the cost.
Just a thought. Nicely done Joberg!

Yes, the MDF form could work, but a vacu-formed case would be too flimsy. Doing it in fiberglass would be a more viable (and not pliable) option.
This is of course on my radar as far as new projects are concerned (another V.K. in the future)...but now with that 2001 Space Station under construction, I don't see myself starting that project for another 6 months |

For the record many of those road cases, including the Platt cases were vacuum formed, albeit with thicker gauge plastics.

Joberg -
I agree with Andy. That was my thought as well. There are varying thicknesses and depending on the design, you could do an interior pull as well.
Of course that's more work up front - and a lot of pre-measuring and planning to allow for the materials and fit, but it could be pretty cool.

Would be nice to do it as the Samsonite attaché-caisse...thicker material for sure (don't know what kind of plastic they're using).
We just have a few good shots of the case, but the whole thing (good pics and measurements) is elusive at best. |

amazing work as always joberg. this is really a beautiful piece and what makes it even better is its not a modified found object - you essentially made this bad-boy from scratch.

For information this style of case is generally vac formed from 5/6mm ABS plastic.
The vac form tool would have to be substantial to withstand the pressure and the material isn't cheap at that thickness at around £120.00 sheet.
ABS also has to be pre-dried before use as it soaks up moisture from the atmosphere. If you don't dry it out it before use you run the risk of the sheet being ruined as the moisture boils of leaving the material looking like the surface of the moon - an expensive mistake to make as I know to my cost! |

Thanks Photek and thanks Pro Mod for the info about the ABS didn't know that info about moisture and that particular plastic. |

Agreed! Great work Joberg. But the added info, as always, is an nice bonus, Pro Mod.
