Great news !
Kaiyodo as also very recently released a Kane figure, this time as a gashapon, and from the pics I saw on eBay it looks great, considering its small size !

|
|
Having waited patiently for well over a year with no recent online updates, I checked again with the local hobby shop yesterday and was told that these two ALIEN kits planned for release by Polar Lights (Kane and the Alien Queen) have been cancelled (are no longer available), supposedly due to the high cost of tooling and production, and assumed low demand. How sad.
So far I've found no further news, so I would hope this is not true. But although Monsters-in-Motion still lists the kit as "not yet available" on their site, who knows how frequently they update their offerings . . .
It seems Kane just can't get a break. - R13 _________________ Gosh, you've really got some nice toys here . . . |

So.
Although last Fall I was told by my local hobby shop that the POLAR LIGHTS kit of "Executive Officer Kane" was cancelled, now I am starting to find references to its release and PL finally has the kit listed, stating its release as last month.
Elsewhere release details are sparse to non-existent, but Monsters-In-Motion is also taking pre-orders now, and reports a June 30 release.
It is an expensive kit, coming in at over $125, but judging from the images, it might be worth the wait(?)
Apparently as with the earlier Hot Toys® figure, John Hurt has once again not allowed his resemblance portrayed in this piece.

|
|
I assume many here have already seen Hot Toys' upcoming release of Ripley (2.0), both in her original ALIEN jumpsuit and as the pilot of the Power Loader (also updated). As with all of their more recent releases, an amazing resemblance.
But their first release, while showing a resemblance to Weaver in the initial sculpt, was altered in the released figure presumably for the same reasons.
I think - as Hot Toys' and Sideshow Collectibles' reputation has grown actors and celebrities are more apt to approve the use of their likenesses. Ego and immortality - to the collector's benefit.
While a high end kit in a limited run, Polar Lights does not yet enjoy that clout.

The face sculpt of Hot Toy's Ripley 2.0 seems to have a rear jaw line that's too square. Also, I don't recall Ripley's hair being that "full".
As an aside, I wonder if anybody will make an aftermarket Kane "face" that could be glued onto Polar Light's offering? You know, after the original face is Dremeled off?
Polar Light's Kane figure seems like an expensive offering... it's too bad that they couldn't secure the rights to Hurt's likeness. I will be buying one, though. |

I thought the same. After obtaining that Hot Toys' Kane a few years ago, I made a rough casting of just the face, then Dremelled off the ridiculous mustache and reworked the face a bit, adding Hurt's now-famous sad eyes. The basics were there - just needed a little tweaking.
Unfortunately, that's as far as I got. Work and other projects distracted my attentions further and like others, I've never had time to complete the project.
One day . . . .

That's some excellent work on Hurt's likeness. All that's really needed is the paint work to really finish it. Really impressive.
I can't help but think that somebody at Hot Toys is a Freddy Mercury fan.
Polar Lights couldn't use Hurt's visage, but I do give them credit for making a sculpt that might pass if one doesn't scrutinize it up close. I'm not sure why Hot Toys would create something that doesn't look like the actor at all.
Again, great work on your version. |

Thanks. Yes, a bit of paint can do wonders, taking even a vague likeness on to an more identifiable one.
Knowing how legalities and approvals can get in the way, I would guess that having rejected the idea, any (even slight) resemblance to the actor was not advisable. The mustache just took it one step further, removing it from any chance of action against it. I would guess the same experience was reflected in the outcome of that first Ripley.
And while the face of the Tom Skerritt figure was a more recognizable likeness, I'm sure — were HT to release the same figure today — it would be spot on.
No doubt you've noticed that when HT figures are first announced, the face of the images are often blurred on Sideshow's site, either because the sculpt is not finalized or perhaps for the same reason - negotiations are not finalized. Such may well have been the case with their GUARDIANS' Star-Lord figure of Chris Pratt(?)
With the POLAR LIGHTS kit, Hurt's likeness would definitely be the first thing to tackle. - R13 _________________ Gosh, you've really got some nice toys here . . . |
