|
|
Hi all,
Since I believe we'll never have the chance to see more A L I E N action figures at 1/6 scale, excepted the ones that have already been released (Ripley and Kane + Dallas in EVA suits), I have decided to create a generic Nostromo crew member myself using salvaged parts found here and there.
Why something at 1/6 scale ?
Well, why not ! I have no particular obsession for action figures but simply wanted to try something new and, more important, have fun !
So let's go... First post is my recreation of Brett's Nostromo hat. The patch comes from Ripley's jumpsuit (you can find 1/6 Ripley spare parts on eBay, although they're pretty pricey now that they have become rarer and rarer with time), the scrambled eggs come from a Marines officer hat and the baseball cap was originally grey, I have simply colored it the right color we all know using a blue Copic marker.
More soon !
Fred

OK, time to post some progress pics !
First thing that I tried my hands on was the trousers.
I have rather early decided that the clothes wouldn't be 100% accurate but rather close to what can be seen on screen, at least something possible in the timeframe of the first ALIEN film...
That's why I first bought a spare lot on eBay comprising of a jacket and a pair trousers from an old 1/6 ALIENS Ripley figure released by Sideshow something like 10 years ago.
Its color fits rather well the blue trousers worn by Brett and it also has large pockets on the legs.
I've simply used the jacket as a donor for the trousers. I took all the available pockets (= pockets 1 to 3 in pics below) and shoulder straps (= leg straps in pics below) from it and then sticked them with Superglue on the trousers...
I'm quite pleased with the result.
I'll need to add some weathering to give it more personality (Right...) but I'll do this later, for now I'll have to concentrate on the jacket.
More news very soon, stay tuned !
Fred

Look at what has arrived in my hands today !
Since I'm already thinking of a display for my Nostromo crew member, I had the idea to look for a 1/6 Star Wars display base...
Why ?
Because the same kind of plastic panels were used to dress some walls of the Death Star and Nostromo interiors !
I have found one on eBay for 20$ (was originally intended to display a Death Star Stromtrooper from Ep IV), it looks spot-on with the bottom of the Nostromo uniform ! (the shoes are spare ALIEN Ripley sneakers found also on eBay)
More soon !

It's been a long time, Fred. Great to see you still active here.
I'll be eagerly watching the development of your 1/6-scale project.
Lovely work so far! _________________ "Your old titles mean nothing here... Captain!" |

By the Gods All kinds of love from the old timers here Fred
Cool project...shame that no toy-makers did a run of those characters.
Keep up the great work! |

Thank you JB, glad to see you're still around !!!
I agree, it's such a shame we always get the same characters again and again... There's hope though since NECA should release a Brett and a Parker as part as their next wave of ALIEN figures later this year !
Not 1/6 but better than nothing !
Next update on my 1/6 project this week I hope... The more I think about it, the more I'd like to do more than one figure in the end ! (I even have ideas for a diorama now... Oh well...)

Thanks Fred !
The head will be something generic as I'm not looking at all to replicate any of the Nostromo crew members we saw on screen... All I want to do with his project is something that would fit the ALIEN look as it was defined in 1979. _________________ THE FUTURE IS A THING OF THE PAST |

OK, let's talk about the jacket this time.
Nostromo jackets worn by Dallas, Kane or Brett are important pieces of costume that helped define these characters. We all remember the lacings on the sleeves and the Nostromo marking on the back. It was logical I would try to replicate this iconic piece of costume as part of my 1/6 project...
But where to start ?
That's when I remembered John Mollo and Tiny Nichols had used genuine RAF and USAF uniform pieces as the basis for Dallas and Kane's jackets or Ripley's jumpsuit !
So I started to look for something similar at 1/6 scale and after some eBay research stumbled on a WW2 US tank crew jacket. This one looked perfect, like something between Parker's leather jacket and Brett's well worn jacket !
All I had to do was then to use Riley's jumpsuit as a donor for lacings and patches.
The trickiest part was now to see how I would replicate the stenciled letters on the back... I considered doing a stamp that would replicate the Nostromo marking at the right scale but suddenly realized I still had a Lettraset transfer sheet full of correct "Pump" letters that would perfectly fit !
Well, the letters were a little too big though to write the word "Nostromo", I then decided to go for the word "Snark" instead, as this was the original name of the Nostromo in early versions of the ALIEN script.
Cherry on the cake, the letters were applied without any problem to the fabric !
I then started weathering the jacket to give it more personality by adding different colors and ended with graphite powder applied directly with my fingers. (will also have to do apply the same process to the trousers and cap)
Quite happy with the result, even if the photos below can't capture all the subtle tones and textures of the jacket !
Fred

Looking good Fred. It definitely has the right feel. I like the Snark Reference too.
