Well, this is absolutely unreal! After discovering this site a couple of weeks ago (first post btw. Greetings everyone!) I read this thread about the chess set. I've always loved it but never thought there was a real-world equivalent...kind of assumed it was created for the film. (Never assume, I guess.)
So, after reading this thread, I did what others did: got on the net and did a lot of research. In fact, I was getting ready to do a VERY long-winded post about the similarities and differences between the commercially available chess sets and molds and Sebastion's set.
I also searched EBay and EBay.CO.UK. I found a used "British Birds" set on the U.K. site....looks very similar to the molds sold by Artcrafts....bid on it and won. Very reasonable price (though the shipping to the U.S. was three times what I paid for the set.). But I figured, what the hell, I won't have to do any mold work, and my chances of finding a closer match may be slim to none. So the deal is done. Haven't received it yet, but, obviously, this may be a moot point....because Mr. Ross just blew my ship out of the water.
Mr. Ross, your sculpts are absolutely amazing! In fact, I sincerely believe they actually IMPROVE on the pieces seen in the film.
If you are planning on manufacturing and selling pieces based on your sculpts, then I truly wasted my money.
If the price is reasonable, then count me in for a set. I would be very proud to have such pieces displayed in my home!
ASTOUNDING JOB! |

mmm... YOU WAS THE WINNER! I was in doubt about this particular mold set and let it pass. I think Rick work is ASTOUNDING and better than any moulds (molds) found till now! Anyway, this set could be a good starting point also. _________________

Hi all
I'm in England. If that is any used to anyone? I could send as gifts and probably avoid most of the custom charges. Don't know what postage would be like |

Oh well, if I find something better I can always put it back on EBay....or maybe Mr. Ross would trade me for his chess set. (ha) |

Bad luck... Now, I'm waiting Mr. Ross blaster kits to build a new PKD and Snub... Too much work! Nah... I think Rick will do a better job than me with this chess set. Let's time go on and watch... _________________

Well, if you could find a chess set that's the same as Sebastion's, I'm sure someone would be interested, myself included, depending on the price. As for postage: It cost me 15 British pounds to have the set I won from EBay. co.uk delivered to the U.S. (surface mail), which is almost 30 U.S. dollars. |

I would like to thank you all for your very kind comments about my work on the chess pieces. I've been really passionate about this set for a long time. I love playing chess, even though I am probably the worst chess player on the planet. I've always thought that Sebastian's set was, by far, the most interesting set I had ever seen, and it fits so well into his little universe. I did my best to interpret what I saw in the film and translate into these 3D forms. It was necessary, however, to extrapolate on many of the details that were not completely clear to me. ( I just used "frog DNA" to fill in the gaps. )
Some of you have e-mailed me asking if I intend to sell my version of this set. For the time being, I am just focused on finishing a set and table for myself. However, I may consider offering a very limited run of these if I can adequately find out the history of the original set. I believe it might be more than 50 years old. Another determining factor in my decision will be cost verses quality. You can all appreciate that casting high quality chess pieces can be a very labor intensive affair. I would not want to offer these in "kit" form. They would have to be finished pieces. So, in order to make this happen, I would need to strike a balance between production cost and sell price. As I progress with my set, I will have a better understanding of this latter point.
In the meantime, I am enjoying this project fully. I will keep you posted on how it turns out. Again, thank you all. I am encouraged by your comments.
Sincerely,
Rick _________________

Rick, here you have your very first customer for this chess set! Sure!
Cost are an issue, ever, but passion is sometimes stronger ... We (IMHO) will wait until your work ends. I'm sure you will do the best you can.

Hello Rick,
I would also like to express interest in your chess set. Of course that comes after my interest in your enforcer, and your... etc.
Nice job!
