Now i have to go through all his movies to see if its a constant, thanks for nothing Fred
Some directors like that sort of thing, John Landis always gets a "See you next Wednesday" reference in his movies, dont know where it comes from
but it is in "2001" as you probably know Fred. _________________ Formerly offworld66 |

No, I didn't know... but I guess it's from dr Heywood Floyd conversation with his daughter via "VID-PHON", right ?

Looks like there's a WHITE DRAGON counter in Sebastian's apartment !
See by yourself :

You are correct sir. Also look for the interior panels to Deckard's apartment elevator in Zhora's dressing room.

The Moebius / Dan O'Bannon short bande dessinée story THE LONG TOMORROW (first published in METAL HURLANT, the original french version of HEAVY METAL, in 1976) was a key influence in the early stages of pre-production of BLADE RUNNER, I'll try to post something about this soon...
But a friend of mine discovered that a tiny detail of that story was obviously used in STAR WARS, in an almost unaltered form !
That's not the only time Joe Johnston "took inspiration" in French comics, I'll post more about this ASAP... _________________ THE FUTURE IS A THING OF THE PAST |

Great find! I have had that particular Moebius comics since early 80's. Never took attention so close of it. Nice imperial probedroid. |

Kipplezone.com has the complete comic on it but you may have to search around to find it. It wouldn't let me make a direct link to it.

Yep, It amazes me each time I look at this short story because you can find this probe droïd, Blade Runner sets and The 5th Element cars in its pages ! _________________ THE FUTURE IS A THING OF THE PAST |

Yep LA2019, in that case you're 100% right !
OK, another one related to THE LONG TOMORROW...
Moebius' flying cars inspired Ridley Scott in the early stages of development of BR, it's obvious when you look at his vision of Zhora's death... Look at the car !!! (BTW, I think that the way she dies smashing a police car could be a reference to Richard Donner's first SUPERMAN movie : In this film, Clark Kent is accidentaly hit by a car in the street. Of course, he's not hurt but the front of the car is destroyed... Here, the superman is a replicant girl and when she hits the car, she dies)
The last time I saw a flying car inspired by THE LONG TOMORROW, it was in THE 5th ELEMENT, a bad movie IMHO where the look of the city was also taken from Moebius and O'Bannon's short story... but Moebius did concept design on this one, so at least Besson paid tribute in a way to the original material !

Here are two A L I E N and BLADE RUNNER french posters concept art...
I'm so glad those were not finaly greenlighted, they were IMHO too complicated and had zero impact, but I'm glad to show them here...
ENJOY !
Liberatore's BLADE RUNNER poster concept :
(Liberatore was famous in Europe in the early 80 for "Ranxerox", a very violent Bande Dessinée filled with a lot of violence and sex)
René Ferracci's A L I E N poster concept :
(he did a lot of beautiful film posters in France during his long carrier but I guess scifi horror was not his thing)

Very cool concept work. I remember the Ranxerox t shirt adds in the back of Heavy Metal magazine.

Thanks a lot for the nice comment, Andy !
I'm really into A L I E N these days, so here is something rather odd I wanted to share for some time... THE NOSTROMO LANDING GEAR TABLE !!!
This "hydraulic table" was hand made by designer Phil Baier in the mid seventies and won numerous design awards... Pretty similar to the Nostromo landing gear, don't you think ???
Here is a link to Phil Baier's site if you want to see more of his work (his "dual quad" as a little somthing that reminds me of the Harkonnen furniture in Lynch's DUNE) :

Thanks Tim !
BTW, don't know if you've noted this on his site, but the legs of the table look rusted, a little bit like the Nostromo landing gears !

Well spotted, Neil... but I think Tim had already noticed that (look at the VK possible group project in the props section).
(Thanks for the kind words related to this thread, too !)
OK, I have another one :
I've always wondered if the off dialogue that introduces Zhora's dance during the SNAKE PIT sequence was intended as a kind of joke related to HR Giger... I say that because the voice sounds a little german, pretty close to the way Giger talks english (If you want to check this, look at the documentaries on the making of A L I E N in the ALIEN LEGACY DVD set) and also because what happens on stage seems to be pretty sexual, very much like Giger's art.
Intentional or not, it makes me grin each time I think of Giger in that scene !!!
Fred
