Thank's for sharing this Tom. I really enjoy these little personal stories, about so many of the people that have inspired me since a teen.

Cool story Tom... and great sketch !
I'm afraid I don't have any similar story to tell about Moebius, the only time I saw him at his home in Paris he acted like a jerk...
One of his friends was with me on that occasion and when we left she just told me something like "hmm, I guess he smoked something bad this morning to be in that state of mind."
Go figure...
Anyhow, I'm still a huge fan of his work. The book that stands high above the rest to me is Le Garage Hermétique (the Airtight Garage) but I love Arzach too... I even have that cool sketch in my workplace, got it from a local bookstore when I was 16 (early 80's).
And since we're going down memory lane I'll explain in my next post where the name "Arzach" (or "Arzak", or etc) went from... a well hidden little secret very few (if any) people are aware of.
What I can tell you for now is that it's related in a way to this location :
Stay tuned !
Fred
PS : JB, I believe you were referring to Christin & Mézières' VALERIAN series in your former post. Already talked about them earlier in that thread...
VALERIAN became very popular by 1982 / 1983, when issues 6 or 7 were released. Mézières was also a close friend of Moebius, I have found a photo taken at Venice, roughly at the time Tom met Moebius at his home (and sorry for the poor quality of that one, couldn't do better with my scan, its size was so small) :

Damn, I just realized that he died exactly one year ago...
According to his wife Isabelle, his last words were :
"I feel something's happening... I feel that I'm transmuting... You've got to give me the fixing codes..."

Fred,
Damn, I just realized that he died exactly one year ago...
According to his wife Isabelle, his last words were :
"I feel something's happening... I feel that I'm transmuting... You've got to give me the fixing codes..."
Thanks for sharing the sketch, story and O.M.G. That last words quote!
Can't top that.
In art school they told us da Vinci's last words were " can't die now,
still more to learn." (which we didn't believe) but it started a game of fictitious
Last words ... Moebius wins. Oh, love to hear the rest of the Arzak tale.
On a subject you posted here a few years ago ( yikes) the BR connection to
Demolitian Man. Did you mention it's director was a director at Scott Free,
And obviously a fan of BR? And he hired David L Snyder his production
designer, and David brought me and a bunch of us from BR
on to the project. So you have pinpointed many items where BR discussions
took place in the art department. This was a more light hearted look at the future.
Some of my best work was the police badge/comunicator seen
on the poster, car graphics, and block Musuem sign and interior graphics.
So it was no accident you saw the connection. _________________ I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... |

Browsing through some pictures of Syd Mead's concepts for ALIENS, I came across this early SULACO:
I'm pretty sure James Cameron drew that pencil drawing.
That is his distinctive drawing and designing technique.

Joberg,
Yeah Warner Bros. made a deal with GM to use a fleet of their
concept cars and we built some matching stunt models to crash.
( mustn't scratch theirs).

Thanks for sharing that info Tom, I didn't know it was only GM's concept cars in there; Lord knows that other U.S. car manufacturers had also their fair share of concept cars at the time |

OK mates, here is the story on the origins of the name ARZACH…
First you have to know I was raised in the South-West of France, in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques, it's located near the spanish border. the Basque country is part of that territory. Basque country is located on both sides of the french / spanish border. Basques on french territory are 100% french citizens and basques on spanish territory are 100% spanish, but they consider themselves above all as Basque. they have their own language, it's not french, it's not spanish… It's Basque. It's to the point where all the traffic signs are written in french and basque or spanish and basque !
I have to underscore that there's a lot of "Z" and "K" in their language before I go further…
Now we're in the late 70's.
Paranoia related to nuclear apocalypse is blatant among european peoples.
Moebius currently lives in Paris where he's spent all his life.
He suddenly decides to "escape" Paris, in part to escape a possible soviet nuclear strike, but also as a return to nature and an healthier life. He wants to breathe fresh air and live a Zen life ! The most remote place from Paris he could find was in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques… Yes, the department where I lived as a teen !
I lived in the city of Pau, home of Henri the IVth, king of France. Moebius lived nearby, in the village of Castet, on the foothills of the Pyrénées mountains. That's where he'll work on films such as TRON and LES MAITRES DU TEMPS (instead of doing BLADE RUNNER, a decision he'll forever regret) and create bandes déssinées such as L'INCAL...
OK, time to unveil the mystery : I believe the name Arzach came from a village located to the north of Pau. I guess he stumbled on it during one of his summer trips with family, when he was looking for a house far from Paris, 3 or 4 years before he moved in the same department. It looks like he liked the name. The full name of the village is ARZACQ-ARRAZIGUET. He took it and turned ARZACQ into ARZACH, then ARZAK, then finally ARZAKC. Removing the original "CQ" with a "K" gave it a Basque vibe. Basques are also known for being proud of their culture and be very strong. Rugby is a big part of the cultural life there. A sport of warriors.
So I guess turning ARZACQ into ARZACH and then ARZAK helped Moebius establish the core identity of his silent warrior !
When he finally settled in the Pyrénées-Atlantique 4 years after having released ARZACH in bookstores, it was in the tiny village of Castet… located less than 50kms from Arzacq-Arraziguet. He lived there from 1979 to 1984.
Et voilà !
Fred
PS : A last thing before you ask. There's not just one village that bears the name ARZACQ in France, there are two actually… both located in the north of Pau : ARZACQ-ARRAZIGUET and GEUS-D'ARZACQ. Maybe the origin of the different spellings of Moebius' ARZACH…

Damn, Tom... I had noticed that DL Snyder had worked on Demolition Man but I was far from imagining you also had, like some BR vets ! Now it looks so obvious !!!
I love the production design developed for that film. A tongue in cheek dystopia, yes, but a really good one ! Such a perfect job... and I don't talk about that Police badge ! Love it !
BTW, did you also design the license plates used on all the cars ? They have a BR vibe I have always loved...

Fred,
I was tooling around the streets of that Basque area over the weekend ,
(Google Map Driving, if you know what I mean). Great story. It fits him.
Ridley would, on occasion, take his time and draw very much like Moebius.
I'm sure you have seen his two or three BR examples. Well Sherman was
able to imitate that dipped pen drawing style too and I try my hand at it
from time to time. Some of Sherman's drawings have been misidentified
as Ridleys on this blog and elsewhere. I love that Moebius pen and ink style...as shown in ," airtight garage".
About Demo Man: thanks. The badge was also a camera (which cops now wear) !
I probably designed the car tags but I'll look to be sure.
And that big map in the police station was also mine. I've done a ton of maps for movies.
If a script said "map" I'd get a call. Wish I did that great

Thanks, Tom ! Glad to see you liked the story !
I now live in Nantes... I must say I miss the Basque country a lot. Beautiful mountains, sea, great architecture and food... But no work in "cultural industries" alas... Agriculture, Army (with elite paratroopers, Legion Etrangère and combat helicopters regiments), Airbus industries instead... (BTW the Wright brothers had established their first European flight school in Pau, that's where some of our WWI aces got their wings... It's weird to think that Airbus was later born in Toulouse, roughly 200kms from Pau)

Yep, I always had a doubt about some of Sherman's storyboards... They looked a little like Ridleygrams. Thanks a lot for underscoring that everybody was trying to nail Moebius' style.
I also draw these kind of pictures when I am able to spare time here and there, it's always refreshing to let your mind freely go on paper and see what happens...

Didn't realize the red dot was a camera... great idea once again ahead of its time, like in BR. I have one of these screen used badges, I was very happy to be able to get it a few years ago.
I'll wait to see if you worked on the car tags, I'd have a question about them... BTW, did you also design the car tags seen in BR ?

Oh yes, that map on GOTh !!!
And since we've been talking about Moebius when he was in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, here is the house (a mill, actually) where he lived... The sketch was done by Moebius circa 1979-1984 and the photo shows the house as it looks nowadays. Very crisp (almost "artificial") compared to what it used to be at the time Moebius lived there...
I'll post more on Moebius tomorrow if I have time... I have found other interesting (little) things about his time in Pyrénées-Atlantiques...

Yes I designed the car plates in BR and there were two or three designs made.
I'm still looking for the Demo Man plates.
Thanks for that lovely house drawing. Oh Moebius!

Above is pencil drawing of BR car plate.
This has colors added.
Cop plate layout with strip of color indicated.
Oh, I found an apartment card with the red added.
Looks like we did get that negative turned around on the back. (Sorry for that nasty tape on the back.)
And we did make some $ cards. _________________ I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... |

This is the Demolition Man badge as it developed.
Production design by David L. Snyder (art director of BR).
And hey, it got on the poster!

As we have been trading stories about Moebius (the artist with the most influence on BR-my opinion only) Here are a few examples by others.
Ridley didn't always draw like this but he could.
These two above are by Sherman Labby, who did all the storyboards (after Rid).
These last two are by me...the very last one was for Disturbia directed by D.J. Caruso.

Finally, this storyboard by Sherman Labby was drawn into a sequence of Deckard
on a farm while Mr Hoffman was considering the part. Neither appeared
in the film. This sketch looks less like a Moebius than most of Sherman's storyboards on THIS film.

Thanks for sharing Tom...lots of art-work I hadn't seen before and that police badge drawing to colour to actual 3-D piece is great!
As for the storyboard "Moebius Style" they're cool also. |
