TRISTAN & ISEULT (1977 / abandonned film project)

From Fantastic Film #11 / excerpts from the Ridley Scott interview (They're talking about what Sir Ridley had planned to do after Duellists) :

FF : What was your next move ?
SCOTT : Well, I had a deal with Paramount to do another two films. They asked what I was going to do next, and I told them I wanted to do a film version of the celtic legend of Tristan & Iseult.

Note : I've added the cover illustration of Arzach by Moebius on the right to show the major influence Metal Hurlant had on this film project.

FF : What did you use for research ?
SCOTT : All sorts of historical books, and, funnily enough, Heavy Metal, Metal Hurlant.
FF : For armor and costume ?
SCOTT : Yes, but also for fantasy. I was going to do Tristan & Iseult as a fantasy, with elements of Star Wars, Conan, Moebius, modern technology and celtic legends.

I've recently found another very interesting illustration in a Tim White artbook I had for years... it's described as :

Amergin and Governal (also as American and Governal)
Painting commissioned by Ridley Scott for a Tristan & Iseult film project.
34,9 x 69,7 cm

I also know that Brian Froud was involved at a certain point in this project... He later did all the design work on Dark Crystal...

Fred

Thank you mates !

I've contacted Tim White to inquire about this painting because I wanted to know more about it and about the fact that it didn't have the same Moebius / Metal Hurlant esthetic as in Sir Ridley's drawings for the same project...

Here is what Tim White told me :

Concerning the picture 'Amergin and Gorvenal' and your questions. The picture was the only item I made for that project by Ridley Scott.
The picture is indeed from the medieval romantic story of 'Tristram and Iseult'. The setting and characters to be painted were described to me by Ridley Scott. I remember at the time being shown some excellent coloured drawings made by RS himself for the project.

All I was told about tham at the time was that Amergin was a sort of 'Merlin' or a 'Gandalf' kind of character with magical powers. Gorvenal was a noble warrior of some kind.

Although I was familiar back then with the work of Moebius his work was not the inspiration for the figures in the painting. The Amergin figure was more like a character from English folklore called 'Herne the Hunter'. Herne also wore a helmet made from the skull and antlers of a deer as well. That is where my inspiration came from. Although in the picture both figures are well protected from the cold with heavy clothes and furs. The setting for the picture was an oasis in the frozen tundra where a mysterious object hidden underground had heated up the whole area around it over many many years. The picture depicts the moments after the departure of the object from beneath the ground via a massive hole that had opened up to let it out. The object zoomed away up into the sky. I never found out what the object was..! That is all I really know about the project. All I had to do was to concentrate on making this one image. The fact that I did not know anything else about the project or the story line was irrelevant to the completion of the picture at that time. Thus it did not matter. I don't think I have any sketches from the original painting project to answer your other question

I was never asked to make a picture of the character Iseult / Isolde.

Et voilà !
Thank you to Tim White for all his explanations, it was very cool to be able to talk with him via email...

Fred

Most excellent Fred! Good to have the info from the people who actually worked on the film/project; it keeps the guessing game to a minimum

OK, let's talk about STAR WARS again...

Remember my former post about the Moebius art used by Joe Johnson to design the ESB imperial probe droid ? Well, Lucas (and his art dept) also took a lot of inspiration from the books of Jean-Claude Mezières, another close friend of Moebius and author (with Pierre Christin) of the still ongoing scifi "bande dessinée" series VALERIAN...

If you want to learn more about Jean-Claude (maybe best known of most of you guys for his design work on The 5th Element), please folllow this link (in english) :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Claude_Mezieres

And now, let the images speak by themselves :

ABOVE
Left : Georges Lucas / Return of the Jedi (1983)
Right : Jean-Claude Mezières / Le Pays sans Etoile (1972) (the girl is a secret agent sent on a remote planet, this scene takes place on a flying vessel pretty similar to Jabba's barge)

More STAR WARS / VALERIAN comparison images to follow very soon...

Yes Fred, Valerian was one of my favourite B.D. in Belgium (with of course the world of Moebius). I thought that the stories and the art were great fun!

Same here Joberg, loved those albums as a kid !

Here is another example...

ABOVE : Mezières / L'empire des 1000 planètes (1971)
BELOW : Georges Lucas / Star Wars (1980 & 2006)

Aaah Valérian !!!...i'm still a big fan after all those years ! the first comic of the serie i read was 'la cité des eaux mouvantes' outstanding !
I think i was 9 or 10 at the time and it was something wonderful for a young boy to discover this universe. I particularly love ' Bienvenue sur Alflolol' which is one of the first Sci-fi ecolo-comic ever !!

Great comparison pics, well done Fred !! Smile

Thanks once again for the kind words, guys !

OK, another VALERIAN / STAR WARS comparison :

LEFT : A Shingouz. Those (they're 3) are black market masters in various Valerian albums.
RIGHT : Watto from the Phantom Menace. Don't exactly remember if he was a black market merchant since I almost fell asleep watching this bad movie but, well... you got the idea, right ? (something weird : The Shingouz haircut looks almost like Bart Simpson's... and Watto's skull cap always made me think of Homer !)

The art dept also took some inspiration in one of Franck LLoyd Wright's architectural projects (yes, the Wright responsible for Deck's house) !

TOP : Franck LLoyd Wright, Gordon Strong Automobile Objective and Planetarium (unbuilt), 1924-25.
BOTTOM : Jabba's castle / Return of the Jedi, designed by the great Ralph Mc Quarrie.

Coming next : Blade Runner street art !

Thanks Joberg !

OK, another (completely different) one...

Some of you know I'm a huge street art fan, I really love Banksy, Obey, Kaws, Invader works (very refreshing at the beginning, their art has become more and more powerful as public recognition followed their path).

I also like WK Interact works... they're very brutal, powerful and graphic, something ideal for the city he lives in : New York !

One of his pieces catched my eye, you're going to understand why :

Yes, it's the damn BR Blaster in the girl's hand !

Don't know where this is displayed but I guess it has a lot of impact when you take those stairs... Very cool, don't you think ?

Fred
