Exactly! I used to know some hobbyists that could do it, but they gave up a long time ago. I may have to go to my camera shop and see if he knows anybody else who might be able to do it. Ironically even though Silk screening can be cheap in comparison, some of the places I worked with would also use photoliths to make the screens. Most of the ones I know now just print onto transparency paper or vellum.

Interesting doc, the printer does them for me at such a great price, complete with the acrylic, that i`ll stick with him but if you dont try new ideas you dont really learn anything so will
have a crack at it when i can.

Its perfect Fred and very easy to reproduce i think.
Anyone could do the artwork and possibly because the neon is so straight forward , it may be affordable.
Great for display Very Happy

Definately Andy, what i`ll probably do is just get the acrylics made for anyone who wants them and they can take it from there, i dont think
shipping for a completed lightbox would be practical.
The signs vary around $30-40US each plus shipping, if i got him to do a run say of 10 vid phons, i might be cheaper.
If anyone can tell me if these prices compare with international prices it would be handy to know as i dont want to waste anyones time.
The guys back from hols on Jan 10th so weve got some time if anyone has some input.

Sure thing temponaut. BTW are there any facilities in Japan to purchase second hand neon signs? Im thinking that any Japanese neon would smoke in a BR collection, it seems if you customise a neon sign its very expensive, a generic, second hand one, not so much.

The printer is back from holidays soon and i need a better pic of the vid phon sign to make it all very quick and easy for him, if anyone can help
it would be appreciated.

Offhand, the best bet I can think of is Yahoo! Japan Auctions; a cursory search just now revealed a variety of used neon signs available. I also found many neon signs available new at pretty reasonable prices. Unfortunately, the vast majority of these signs seem to be written in English rather than Kanji, or to feature logos (e.g., "Lowenbrau," "Miller High Life," etc.) that are familiar on neon signs easily available Stateside.

I did find several Kanji signs made from clear plastic panels with words and/or pictures cut into the plastic; when a (built-in) colored light is directed through the panel, the cuts refract/reflect light to the eyes of the viewer, causing the words and images to glow brilliantly.

Here are few examples. The opening price on each auction is JPY2000, which is currently the equivalent of US $21.27.

Kanji for samurai (BiN price: JPY2500):
http://page11.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/n64631823

Kanji for bushido ("the way of the warrior," BiN price: JPY2500):
http://page9.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/k105533798

Kanji for eigyouchuu ("open for business," BiN price: JPY2200):
http://page5.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e86753525

Kanji for yoyakuseki ("reserved seat," BiN price JPY2200):
http://page5.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/e82716582

Hiragana for youkoso ("Wecome," BiN price: JPY2200):
http://page8.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/h124603003

Roman letter sign for "sushi" (not Kanji, but still appropriate for Deckard Wink )
http://page8.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/h124425556

Roman letter "Beware of Bulldog" sign (for Blaster lovers; BiN price: JPY2500):
http://page18.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/w3242635

"Atari" logo (if I recall correctly, this logo actually appears on a sign in the film; BiN price: JPY2500):
http://page9.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/k106677798

This company also takes custom orders. It would be interesting to see what they can do with the White Dragon or Eye World artwork.

The problem with these "etched board" signs is that, although they are visually striking, they don't have the same "mod retro noir" effect of humming neon tubes.

Offworld, Considering my main telephone is an original Western Electric spit cup bakelite dial handset made in the 1920s restored to as new working condition-- the first model made after the candlesticks and just like one seen in the Maltese Falcon, I'd better get into this Vid Phon deal if a slot is open. I do have to fess up and say that I tacked on a down stream touch tone generator so I can do "press one to be on hold forever" since the phone itself has a mechanical dial)

Count me in!

Much appreciation for your great research temponaut, i`ve had a couple of the laser cut lights for a while, their actually quite good and very cheap,
picked mine up for $6 each. Your right though, neon is king.

No problem doc, they will be made to order and only for propsummit members, no profit in it for me but as i live close to the printer and post office, its no hassle.

You're welcome, offworld66. Glad to help out however I can.

I'll snoop around a little more this weekend to see if I can't find an inexpensive resource for authentic neon signs written in Kanji.

Offworld66, A little bit of a sidetrack, but will/can your printer do vertical barrier black (e.g. totally opaque) stripes on optically clear thin plastic, or does it have to be a dimensional slab? And do them according to specific spacing with great consistency over a wide range of sizes? If this is too convoluted, I can PM more info...
