Syd Mead Voight Kampff

Hey there Summiters.

I thought I'd show you guys what's been keeping me from working on the film versions of the VK. Somehow along the way, I stumbled upon Syd's two original sketches for the proposed VK. Stetson and company did an amazing job of paraphrasing the concept in the nine days they had to get this to the screen. Still, I felt his original would make an excellent study model as well as an homage to one of the great forward thinkers of our time. It didn't take much persuasion to lure my friend Jonathan into the idea and soon we were making Syd's elegant yet sinister vision. To make matters even cooler, Syd toured the shop we were working at and was thrilled at the progress and even advised a bit. Chuffed!!!!

SO, here it is kinda taped together and looking like it needs to be remade in Rhino. Which will happen with the body soon. But I hope anyway you guys like the work so far!

There's something about concept designs that have a raw artistic quality that really speaks of the artist and their personal style. Often when transformed into the 3rd dimension they have a more magical quality. Of course at the same time the shift from paper to physical space admits their flaws just as readily...

I am not making any judgements of this piece. It is amazing. I don't want my musings on concept designs to seem critical. I love the raw unbridled quality first drafts have. Whether music, writing or art....

This is a great physical example of that inspired energy.

And by that I meant to say GREAT JOB!

I have been drinking...! It looks awesome. It's just really interesting to see a first impression carefully and meticulously crafted into something real. Something about that first draft, the first interpretation, being given such careful attention.

Of course that same attention is given to the final product when ideas are developed, but stepping back, as an exercise, to the original ideas and giving them the same attention highlights the beauty and flaws of both the first concept and the final product.

Thanks guys! It's a pleasure to hear praise from such a talented group. A labor of love is only as good as its it's source material. I just love Syd's economy of line, how the bellow at maximum height matches the angle of the monitor. How, alternately, the fin on the back of the bellow marries another shape in the back to form a square when it's closed. These elements are amazing to me and somehow remind me of Asian inspired art movements.
At some point the monitors will have to work. Syd said the tiny monitors should look as if they were add-ons, perhaps label them Toshiba and paint them as though the police retrofitted them at some point onto the housing.
Again, at some point this year, I'll be remaking the body to be as pristine as only a computer can do, like it came off an assembly line. Here's a few more for the record...

Crazy great detail there!! Wow! An absolutely astounding build. So cool.

I always liked Mead's design for the VK machine more than the machine built. Not that I don't like that was used, I really do. But Mead's has a little more panache.

Syd's designs are amazing. The VK in the film was very nice, but not full-on Mead.

You are going the extra mile on this. It must me a real bonus to have Syd see the progress and approve.

I really want to see you follow through on this.

As good as it looks in B/W, certain angles reveal incongruities and things I'd like to work out a little better, but having taped it together for the first time to snap these shots, I gotta admit it has been well worth the effort! I'll keep putting additions up as they take shape.

Still have to do the "drawer" under main monitor and gimbled magnifier screen above that. And the bellows.... I have a few ideas though that might make it all happen.

Another builder (Sean Morgan I think?) made a pretty damn good resin one. It didn't fold in half like Syd's design indicates nor does it have a separate cartridge but a really nice replica nonetheless. I would love to see someone make a metal one with magnet hinge!

I think if I get on to some other Syd design, it may be his microscope. But such a model is ages away, up to my eyeballs in too many projects. I swear it's like a disease...

I do plan on showing off a few more of these starts in the coming months!
