Thanks, neil !

As for the little toys here and there: yes, some of them certainly look as if they could be gachapon, or, rather, gachapon-style novelties. (The gachapon phenomenon didn't actually begin until 1988, well after Alien was made. However, similar types of capsule toys were imported to Japan from as early as 1965.) The one on Lambert's console reminds me of the little toys with suction attachments that some Japanese drivers put on the insides of their car windshields. Some of these are simply fun mascots, while others are meant to bring good luck on the roads. If Lambert's is a good-luck charm, it obviously didn't do much good.

Thanks a lot for the info on the gachapons / gashapons history, Gary... Very interesting !

I think the toy on the left in the photo below is one of the little toys with suction attachments you're reffering to, no ?

I think Lambert's gashapon is a human character with an elephant head, what do you think ??? If it's supposed to be a good-luck charm mascot, do you know the meaning of such a character with an elephant head in japanese culture ??? (at least, if there's one !)

Fred

PS : A last pic of the Narcissus interior, just to show more clearly the second hypersleep pod... (note the hardware compartment on the right wall, it came from the Nostromo bridge set)

The toy on the left kinda looks like a toy that has a spring inside and you push it down (To stick to a surface) and when it looses it's suction it jumps into the air.

Great pic of the interior of the Narcissus aswell Fred.

Yep, good catch on the Narcissus interior shot. Totally forgot about that one.

Man, that set looks more cobbled-together than usual for this film.

This is the Bird I had...

It was about 5" wide and hung from a spring. I had both a red and blue version and might still have the box.

Well as we know the Nostromo has three main decks, A, B and C... Engineering and support systems are all down on C.

Ron Cobb drew a cutaway of the ship but I don't seem to have it handy. Here is somebody's deck plan I found on the web

...as you can see he buries the engine room with the windows, down in the middle of the ship.

This room seems similar to the Destruct System room with the windows

But it might be a different angle, or even a redress of the same set, to give the impression of multiple rooms on the same deck level.

Another screen-cap of the Narcissus interior, just to show there actualy was a second seat aside the one Ripley sits in...

IIRC, this scene when Dallas listens to music aboard the still docked Narcissus was supposed to take place in a blister similar to the one Ash uses earlier in the film...

Come on Karl, let's keep the lights off, Cpt Dallas needs some sleep after the very bad day he had ! (bad landing on a hostile planet + one of his crew members infected by a... thing)

OK, back to the topic !

I'm very excited by what I've just discovered : As I told you in a former post, one of the gashapon toys looks like a human character with an elephant head...

What I've just realized is that it's displayed in front of Kane's monitor on the bridge... and you know what ?
David Lynch's The Elephant man (1980) was the next film John Hurt shoot just after A L I E N (1979) !!!

Shocked

Great joke, love the idea !!!

Prepare yourself to cry at the end ! (that's why I only saw it once, when it was released in 1980)

I've cried at the end of ALIEN, when that poor creature nobody seems to understand is ejected into space... Very sad... it broke my heart...

It's definitely the same room, seen from a different angle... Please look at this :

The first pic is a screencap of the scene where Ripley returns to the "destruction room" after her first encounter with the big Chap, at the end of the film... The second Pic is a production photo (I think it's supposed to take place after the bad landing).
Look at this structure I've pointed out, same shape and detailing = same room !
(I also think the destruction trap door you can see in the screencap was a simple chest added on the ground especialy for this scene)

Fred

PS : The design of this room still is a mystery to me... For example, where are Brett & Parker's seats supposed to be located ??? (would love to see a blueprint of that damn room)

Another great find Fred.
Just by changing the angle, they've made it look like a completely different room.
