I've desperately tried to identify these birds, alas without luck so far...

One of my friends pretends he actualy saw those while touring the UK in the late 70's... He also told me that the blue feathers were not present on the ones he saw...

Any chance someone could help me identify those very iconic (although ugly) A L I E N props ???

Fred

My grandmother had one back in the 70s--don't recall the blue feathers though. No idea what the name of them was.

EDIT

I just did a quick search and found these.

(The feather is too small & hat the wrong colour, but the rest looks ok?)

Drinky birds... sure, my parents had one of those ghastly things in the 70s too. That and some of those trolls with the big bellies. Shocked

Regards the bigger feather, I would not put it past the prop guys to have added a feather. Note that only one bird has it in the screengrab, and the feather is a lighter blue than the rest of the plumage.

The gadget works off of the fact that it's a glass bulb, and has some kind of chemical in there that responds to heat, I think.Anyway it keeps the motion going.

In ALIENS there was a more executive-toy type of gadget on the Sulaco, the metal clacker balls in a frame that transmitted the motion, so that only the end ball swung out.

When I first read the title of the thread I was thinking it might also have referred to the fat red bird hanging from the spring in the crew quarters. I used to have one of those, and I might still have the box. It is long since gun though.

Well Andy, wanted to open another topic for those but since you've already mentioned them here in the post above, let's talk about what I call "Nostromo Gashapons"...
These tiny toys are displayed all around the ship... I think they were intended as gashapons (japanese capsule toys) mainly because :

1
they're very small, most of them could be enclosed in a capsule.

2
Even if they have different designs, most of them have quite the same (round) shape.

3
They appear in a scene in the dining room aside freshly opened food containers, while the crew awaits for god knows what and look bored. (Parker is even playing with what looks like a "pocket" TV)

4
The company that owns the Nostromo is half japanese... they could have introduced gashapons as little gifts offered with the food (remember, the crew members must pay for their food during their mission, Dallas mentions he's offering the meal just after Kane's awakened)

So guys, any idea where they came from... Real toys or props made for the movie ???

Fred

Humm.... a really *bad* idea is crossing my mind Fred... to make the same demuxing/extraction process done with BR 5 discs editions... with ALIEN QUADRILOGY IN FULL! I have the BluRay edition.... wow.... what nice snapshots are waiting!!!!

But, this could be another devoted 1,5Tb Hard disc!!!! Razz

I think Dallas' line "last meal before bedtime, and I'm buyin'!" is likely meant as a joke.

Although the idea of a spaceship where the people aboard have to buy their meals is pretty horrific. They probably also have pay toilets. No wonder Parker is so concerned about the bonus situation. Shocked

In a deleted scene just after their "wakeup", Kane goes to the galley and makes the coffee... while the kitchen does seem very modular and "automat-like", he doesn't appear to be buying anything.

(btw, In this shot of the kitchen, note the pictures on the bins for cookies, etc.)

Superb pic Karl, a classic example of the level of backgound detail that Sir Ridley hooked us all with all those years ago.
To me it screams project and to help kick it off, those coffee pots look very much like the Braun ones used in Blade Runner.
The interconection between these two movies on many levels continues. Very Happy

I agree Karl, Dallas invitation first sounds like a joke... but when you consider there's only ONE 4 seats fonctional escape shuttle for a crew of 7, then having food you have to pay for aboard would be logical...

The more I think about this (hidden) aspect of the story, the more I think about nowadays exhausted tankers and commercial ships employing crews that come from poor countries, know what I mean ?

The Nostromo is an old ship (remember the bad landing, they had problems landing on a planet with almost no atmosphere) and its crew is expendable, MUTHUR says... Try to think like a cold blood Weylan Yutani executive : You wouldn't be ready to loose a last generation ship and its grade A crew to bring back what could be a great investment in weapon research... but an old ship and its grade B or C blue collar crew ? Why not take the risk ?

Fred

PS : Regarding the deleted scene, I agree again... but this could work like a mini bar in an hotel room ? (and since they work for the Weylan Yutani corp, they won't lie if they want to fly again)

Actually the Nostromo carries two shuttles, but one is out of service (accorxing to the novelization and background materials).

Strangely though the Narcissus only seems to have ONE sleep pod! I think the original Cobb designs showed more. But an escape shuttle that carries only.one person is ratheer absurd!

Apparently the Narcissus set was just cobbled together from bits salvaged from the other sets, which is why it looks so haphazard.

Some more hard disk room needed.... Almost 300G to process the Disk 1... but, the idea is exciting... Same with Matrix Quadrilogy (3+Animatrix).... mmm, perhaps I will need to purchase a really BIG DataCenter storage.... Between 1 and 2 Tb by movie... wow... this could be really expensive!!
