Any thoughts on this jacket?

Here's what Propstore said in the description about it...

"A prototype jacket made for Tom Skerritt to wear as Dallas in the original Ridley Scott science fiction masterpiece Alien. This master prototype jacket was made for the actor by Tiny Nicholls the costume supervisor on the film and has “TN” handwritten inside, the jacket came from Tiny. Tom ended up wearing a darker version on screen in the end. The pale khaki coloured jacket has “Nostromo” printed on the back, 2 original “USCSS Nostromo, 180286” patches on both arms, pink trim around the collar and green coloured pockets and ties attached to the front and sleeves. The small patch on the front was added at a later stage and a mark where the original patch was can be seen. Has a “M. Berman Ltd.” costumers label inside. This very rare piece is a must for any Alien fan! "

I'd love to recreat this jacket, have been looking for a similar jacket with no luck.

Any ideas on what to search for?

Appreciate any help Smile

Could look for a tan RAF jacket and add the other parts.
Or check out second hand stores like Goodwill and see if you can find something similar circa 1970's.

You'd be amazed at the stuff you can find second hand.

I found a jacket the nearly matches the Rebel speeder pilots accept for the piping down the sleeves and the collar needed to be modified.

Still need to do the sleeves once I find some matching material.

Those patches look suspiciously like the Thinking Cap Co. Patches.

The jacket is a RAF MK3 flying jacket.

You can try to find a used one on eBay or buy a Alpha Industries version. It's easier and cheaper to get one of those Alpha Ind. but some details aren't right compared with the screen-used Nostromo jackets : The buttons aren't the same (bigger) and the collar is a little larger...

It's still a good option tough if you don't want to put too much in it... The most tricky part is making the sleeve lacings... A RPF member do them (look at the devoted thread, don't remember his ID).

Oh yes, he's also doing screen-accurate shoulder patches... (the wings can be found easily through some online retailers). BTW Andy, why do you think the patches on the concept jacket (pic above) are from the Thinking cap co ?

Fred

PS : The NOSTROMO TAG on the back is pretty difficult too achieve, too... My dressmaker friend used vinyl to apply it on my jacket(s).

Cheers Fred Smile
Is the prototype jacket a Mk3 aswell?
It didn't look too much like it to me, but could be mistaken.
I sent a PM to the person on the RPF, still waiting for a response Smile

Yes Neil, the pen pockets are missing on the sleeve but I think it's a MK3... but the color has been deeply changed, maybe they were looking for a kind of NASA look ???

The lacings on the front pocket come from a very rare US flying suit IIRC, I would be you I'd rather do a Kane jacket (no front lacings)

I wouldn't mind doing a hybrid jacket. One that looks like the proto but without the front lacings, just the ones on the arms.
How would they change to colour that much? It looks like a white jacket thats be stained with something.

Don't know how they did it... Using Javel or something like that ???

If I ever do another NOSTROMO jacket in the future, it would be Parker's... It's a leather jacket with patches and a yellow tag on the back... Pretty easy to do compared to Kane's & Dallas'... and very cool WW2 look !!!

You know you will do another, Fred, lol.
I really want to attempt one now, maybe in the future i will.
If i do, i think it'll have to be Dallas's jacket.

I agree... I was talking mainly about the front pocket lacings... You'll have to buy TWO flying suits in order to do those, one for each pocket.

Same here, that's why I've asked a dressmaker friend who work in the movie industry to do my 6 jackets... (and that means MORE money to be spent, of course)

Nearly all the members of the Nostromo.
Where did you get your lacing from Fred?

Yep, 6...

The lacings came from 3 genuine Soviet VKK 6 flying suits... Not screen-accurate at all, I was looking for something original to wear on a daily basis...

Fred

Here's a work in progress pic taken last year (the colour of this one was rather green, the others were rather brown, Tim / Offworld66 owns one of them and seems to be very happy with it) :

I was looking for a weathered look, so even the patches were dyed to get a well used aspect...
