Thanks Steve. It sounds like Bob is convinced there were duplicates. If only there was one photo of his original, I reckon we'd know in a flash. Perhaps we'll just never know. Ah well.
Thanks for the kind words everyone, but I must reiterate: all of this hard work is being done by Colin (8th_passenger). I'm just watching in awe like the rest of you.
Colin has now sanded smooth the side of the key that was previously milled flat.
He also made a jig to hold the key vertical while he drills the holes for the four magnets. (See, I told you he was a professional!)
And the same jig is used when it comes to tapping the holes.
More to come... _________________ Mike

And the updates keep coming
The four magnets screwed in, temporarily for now. Ultimately they will be fixed in place permanently.
The resin 'dowel' pieces are glued on to form the handle.
They are then trimmed, filled and the handle is masked and primed.
Notice the line showing where the handle pieces meet the resin. This could easily have been filled and smoothed, but that would not have been faithful to the original!

It's a nightmare!
The word compromise may be in the paint.
Not long now.

On a side note (concerning the colour); my Father worked as a graphic artist for Gestetner Brussels for 30 years. Each year, Gestetner in London (headquarters) was sending pictures of their new lorry (delivery truck). The paint scheme was always weird: bizarre greens, odd ocres, etc. It was impossible to reproduce those colours (in Belgium) and many time, headquarter would send the paint directly from the U.K. to have the Belgian truck match the English ones |

Get yourself a RAL colour swatch. It may be RAL 6002, RAL 6004 or RAL 6005. A builders supply or paint shop should be able to get a hold of one. |

I vote this the best prop reproduction of the year. So cool and wonderfully obscure, with perfect execution. I am continually in awe.
Great work guys.

Thanks Andy.
Thanks also Space Jockey for the colour suggestions.
I have a Halfords Vauxhall Leaf Green spray which is okay but not quite right. There is a Plastikote green which looks promising and a Montana spray. It may have to be one of these depending on what I can get.
I am very close to finishing

Did you think about a first coat of black on the grip before spraying the Halfords green ?
It could make your coat of green slightly darker if needed ?
My 2 cents...

Key is looking fantastic.
Having embeded things in clear resin I know how difficult and frustrating it can be.
I've been studying the original key on the auction site and yours is far superior!
By the way the original sold yesterday for £5040.00 - $7847.00. |

More evidence that the right man is doing the job: Colin made (!) little brass spacers which fit in the holes in the magnets and bring them down to match the diameter of the screws. This ensures that everything is nicely centred.
Here are the first two magnets firmly fixed in place:
And here, all four. You can see that Colin has even matched the orientation of each magnet with the photo reference!
So there's only one thing left to do now, and that's to paint the handle green.
Here is how the key looks currently, 95% finished, with the handle in grey primer.
The next time you see this it just might be finished...
I think when this is done Colin deserves a Prop Knighthood or something. I've never seen anything quite like it. _________________ Mike

I think it would be time to create a "Hall of Fame" kind of thing here on propsummit... We had some great projects realized on the board these past years, and this Key would definitely have a central place in this area...
Well done guys, I humbly bow before your superior craftmanship !

Thanks everyone for your kind comments.
Mike and I were really hoping to get the key finished so we could send it to Bob for Christmas.
In the end we felt it was worth taking the time to get a good green color match, rather than rushing it.
As you can see by the last photo's of the key the weathers not too great where I live.
I hope to finish the key over the Holidays. I've found some paint colors I think will be a good match and need to apply them with an airbrush.
I've really enjoyed doing this project with Mike. And even though I've built the key I couldn't have done it without Mike's research, drawings and resourcefulness which have been excellent throughout.
Also Mike has been very patient with me. I think its taken a bit longer that he thought!
Thank you Mike.
Also lets not forget Mike's Muther box is yet to be completed.
