Hi folks,

I started up a project, and I'm looking for any comments or suggestions.

I'm doing a satellite image of LA as it might have been taken during Blade Runner. (You know those sneaky SOB's were photographing everything). I started off with a high-res (300 DPI at poster size) image of LA that included the Bradbury, Union Station ( later to be the LA police station), second street tunnel, etc.:

I thought I'd modify it by adding the Tyrell towers, putting the police station over Union Station, leaving the Bradbury, and generally BR-izing it. I thought at the end I'd trick it out to look like some sort of police document that showed where Deckard went on his replicant hunt.

Here's a closer image of the Tyrell pyramids. I added a wall around them to make it sort of a compound:

And a closer veiw of some of the industrializing of the landscape. I'm leaving the major highways, but sinking them and loading them with traffic:

Anyway, there's a lot to go, but I'm looking for any thoughts or suggestions....

(On a side note, I finally tracked a little something down after looking for nearly 10 years. I should have it shortly. When I do, I'll post some pics).

Edit: Made this a sticky... -Tom

(Nope - none of the above....)

OK, I took the suggestions, and here's an updated shot of the "Tyrell compound":

... and if you zoom in and look between the towers, you can see a reeeealy crowded highway down there (again, this is the actual highway in that area of LA):

OMG!! That is fantastic! I imagine it is going to take quite a bit of work to make everything blend seamlessly.

I really have to hand it to you, you do beautiful work!!!!

Please keep us updated

Just a suggestion. Could you super impose a recognizable portion of fuselage or running gear from a BR flying machine so it looks as though the picture was taken by a surveilance vehicle way overhead?

OK, I think I'm pretty much done with the Tyrell compound (I'll add flyover spinners, etc. later):

There's even a big "security port" where the ground road enters through the wall.

Now to flesh out the rest of the city

I need an opinion. How's this for the size of the police headquarters (it's over Union Station)? I realize it might be a little big, but I want it to be visible.

Hi Ben,

Personally, I would go a little smaller. Comparing it to the size of Tyrell, it seems too big. Maybe try and emphasize height over width if that is possible.

Otherwise, it is looking fantastic!!

I am unsure if you answered this already, but I was curious, how large are you going to print this?

I am really looking forward to seeing this once it is done

Well, I'm currently designing it at 300 DPI in large poster size, but I could go smaller than that....

Thanks Ben! I guess when you say large poster size, you mean roughly 27"x40"?

Thanks again!

Here's the very beginnings of the city buildout. It's not much, and I still have a lot of sweetening to do (color, smokestacks, etc), but this is how crammed I want to do them.

Also, I wanted to have a "dead zone" or "kipple" between the edge of the city proper and the Tyrell compound wall...

Next step - I put Hawker's Circle / Animoid Row around the former area of Dodger Stadium...

... and jammed it with traffic and people. Obviuosly the area just outside of Hawker's Circle / Anomoid Row hasn't been touched yet.

Thoughts?

It was also suggested that I add some neon.

Thoughts?

And here's an alternate "B" version:

I think no matter what I do, though, it won't really "stand out" from the rest of the map becuase it won't be dark enough.

Its not a bad idea, but it seems like there is too much. I'd say you could toss a few in here and there, but they seem too prolific in that sample. Also, I'd have to question just how much a little neon sign (even a big neon sign) would show up on an aerial photograph. It is hard to nit-pick this though, as its such a cool idea and very well done so far. I would love to have one printed when you're done.

This is looking great!

Poster size will be killer. You know I'm on the list!!!!

I think making the police headquarters noticible is great. It maynbe a bit large. Really hard to say. maybe slightly smalledr with a security moat of some sort around it? The moat would or could highlight a smaller scale station?

Ben,

It is really looking great! I am kind of on the fence about the neon though. I dont think neon is that bright that it would appear in an image such as this. I do like the idea though.

Have you given any thought to adding some spinners flying about? Not really sure if they would be visible as well, but it was just a thought.

Otherwise, I am loving it!

Tom

Here's the ongoing city buildout. Once complete, the buildings themselves will be much darker, with color tinting, flames, etc....

(I'll add all the spinners, etc as a lst step).
