Label Removal Method JW Black Label

Ok, I have a couple empty JW black label fifths.

Also a nice clear Listerine bottle with labels scrapped off.

Anyone have suggestions as to how to get the JW labels off the bottles intact? tried steaming a bit and seemed to have little effect. I think the foil content of the label acts as a moisture barrier. Also the foil is very sensititve to marring. Like to get a nice minty set off that i can use on the bottle plus scan for paper prop use.

I have seen bottle labels slide off in my hand ....beer bottles
I think the trick is cold bottle hot room equals condensation which lifts the glue on the label...worth a shot ...

Gives me reason to put cold beer in bottle and drink it, so it's worth a try.

Currently I have a 750ml bottle of Black. When I'm finished I'll see what I can figure out. Too bad too. I've been through six in just as many months.

I started getting it because at Costco it's only $25 for a 750ml. Acctually I prefer Balvenie Double Wood single malt. I only drink that now for special occasions. Seems like one is due.

Have you tried a hair dryer? I think it will be tough to get a label off and keep it intact....

I agree. It might be easier to just re-create the label from scratch. Tiffany (juno) has done foil embossing for her Hogwarts Express train tickets, maybe she can be enticed to give these a go (or at least offer some advice on adding the foil to a re-creation).

I'd actually considered PMing Juno but acquired these bottles so thought I'd give it a shot.

I would say practice on some less pricey bottles with similar types of labels. Putting the bottle with a little water in it in the fridge or freezer to help it condense from the glass out when out in the room temp air. also lighter fluid(naptha) works as a good solvent that breaks down or loosens the glue without staining the label. You would have to soak the label in it though, but it wont hurt the label like water would, and would evaporate quickly. I have heard of products made just for label removing off of collectables before too.

Only label anywhere close to the Black Label type is the REd Label..$4 cheaper!

My wife will have me commited if she finds out I bought a $20 bottle of liquor so I can remove the label! That would be the last straw!

No luck so far. Haven't worked up the nerve to try may last bottle...which is still half full of scotch!

I think steaming entire label over a kettle spout might do it.

Have you tried something called "Goof-off"?
It's made for removing sticky stuff...not sure what it would do to the front of the label though.

I've got a few of the smaller bottles (ok...5, it's good whiskey!)
which should serve well for some tests before I try anything with the two large ones I also have.
A few idea's came to mind so...I'll let you know what I find out!

Bestine! Used in the graphic arts. Chek dick blick. Ita a very hot thin solvent used in pasteup and removal of rubber cement. used it for years.

great to have around the shop.

Naptha...zippo lighter fluid works good for me and doesn't leave residue or stain.

Rubbing alcohol will work pretty good too.

I might have to try the lighter fluid and the Bestine but, If you use the Bestine be sure to have plenty of ventilatation.I'd recomend gloves as well as eye protection and some kind of breather filtration if you can get it...it's quite simply NASTY stuff that has all sorts of ill effects on the central nervous system!
I'm going to try Acetone and one other thing I have that's used in removing make-up adhesives and plastics from three dimensional applications, it's called "Bond-off". I'm curious to see what it will do.

I should have some results up later today about the tests I did last night...I tried six different fluids and one alternate method as well.
