I always imagined that the thing descended to the cargo off-load area seen in the film where the bays we see on the shuttle's flanks would be laterally unloaded/loaded. With a ship this big, cranes and forklifts would take an eternity.

It makes sense what you say here !

Cool

My theory is that the shuttle could "unload itself" like a Skycrane, see what I mean ? Since the shuttle was designed like an actual Skycrane helicopter (a huge cargo area under a craft supplied with heavy engine(s) and four "cardinal landing gears"), it would be logical for it to have a similar way to upload / unload itself...

Fred

BTW, I took the photos of the Skycrane here : http://www.primeportal.net/hangar/bill_spidle3/ch-54a_68-18437/

Did you also notice the 3 little engines above each huge thruster pods ? These look like brake / directional / positioning thrusters, and in my opinion they could be very useful to dock a space station.

BTW, here is a rendition I did of what I believe the Felli Mei shuttle should look like in space flight mode... Something very close to the Aries shuttle in 2001 : A Space Odyssey.

What do you think ?

Fred

I agree on the maneuvering thruster idea.

You're rendition is spot-on!

Is the ship's name Japanese?

This is a great thread, great pictures Fred!!!

I have already started making the patterns for the shuttle-It will be bigger than the Nostromo, and I will not be pulling my hair out trying to redo 25 year old molds. This will be an entirely new kit and awesome, Thanks for posting the pics Fred..

Fred, I identified the engines you are referring to, they are from a Buck Rogers Thunderfighter.

That was an awesome kit, I had it and the Draconian marauder, I am having to scratch build the engine, there is a center one of the three that has a little vector flaps assy. that simply needs added. I also identified some Jaguar V-12 kit valve covers used on a particular top housing... fun fun fun... Also there is a British Ship made by Airfix that comprises some parts... and they still make these kits!

Great pics Fred, thanks for sharing!

The pics got me to thinking how sad it is in most movies being made these days that models like these are more and more becoming a thing of the past with the advent of CGI. Don't get me wrong - there's a lot of really awesome CGI work that has been done as well, and lots of stuff that couldn't be done any other way... but when it comes down to it, the whole concept of SFX is to create something that doesn't really exist and make it seem or look real. It really should be seamless in that you don't think of what you are viewing as a "special effect." In that sense, I feel that with the advances in CGI within even the past few years, well done models like these still look more "real" on screen than CGI ones (and I'm talking about good CGI as opposed to bad.) I can't put a finger on it as to why but that's my opinion. I mean go back and watch 2001: A Space Odyssey and see how good it looks to this day - and it was made over 40 years ago!

I do agree that Outland is a movie that could well fit into the BR universe, and is also in my list of favorite Sci-Fi movies. I looked up Peter Hyams on IMDB to see what other stuff he had done I hadn't realized he also directed 2010. He's got a somewhat spotty record though - he's made some decent movies and then he's made a fair amount of schlock: Timecop or End of Days anyone?

Anyway, this is off the current topic but I thought you guys might find this of interest - I found it by accident when I was looking at Hyams' filmography on IMDB:

Cameron To Adapt Showscan Process For Avatar Sequels
31 March 2011 1:19 PM, PDT

James Cameron appeared to be forecasting Wednesday that Douglas Trumbull’s widescreen Showscan Process will at last be accepted by Hollywood — in digital form. While he made no mention of Trumbull in an appearance before the National Association of Theater Owners convention in Las Vegas, Cameron indicated that he plans to film his upcoming Avatar sequels using a technique similar to Showscan. Trumbull, the special effects genius behind such films as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Blade Runner, introduced Showscan in 1984 — a process using 70mm film shot at 60 frames per second (instead of the usual 24 frames) that critic Roger Ebert described at the time as “incomparably more realistic than anything I had ever seen before on a movie screen … the future of cinema.” Cameron on Wednesday suggested that that future has finally arrived. “If the 3D puts you into the picture, the higher frame rate takes the glass out of the window,” he told the exhibitors.

That was Peter Boyles best film ever in my opinion, he was a complete A-hole villain.. superb acting...

James B. Sikking as "Montone" was also great, They actually outshined Connery... Shocked Wonderful acting....

Loved Frances Sternhagen as the doctor. Some of the scenes SFX wise are a little dated now, but all in all i do really like this movie.

Yeah, Lazerus was a great character, I think she is still acting by the way...
..It's the vast yet claustrophobic sets in the film that are really the crown jewel, for it's minor flaws, Hyams really did a great job on it. It all seems totally functional, believable and real.

,,To my horror though, I heard they are doing a remake, it may be just a rumour, but it would be a tragedy to the original if they did...

..Holy jeeze I hope this does not happen. there is enough trash remakes, sequels, prequels etc...

I can actually see them remaking Blade Runner... just watch.

More "dumbed-down" garbage for the "lady gaga" generation...

This is just sad.

You are 100% right Fred with your comparison to the skycrane.

You can see this is an extension of the earlier concept in the Eagle Transport, very similar in overall scheme of a utilitarian vehicle...

.. although I do love the Hawk design, it is not as believable as the Eagle.
I remember those days after school waiting to watch Commander Koenig and the cool hardware in the early 70's..that show was magic for kids, and a little unnerving ha ha...

Great Observation!

Oh, c'mon, Peter Boyle's best film ever was Young Frankenstein, how could you think otherwise?!?

He did play a very good villain in Outland, and Sikking was great as well. And Sternhagen as the bitchy old doctor was a great performance too. It's too bad though many Sci-Fi movies of this era (the early to mid 80's) got bad reviews and so never got the exposure that they deserved. I guess that could also be due to the fact that there were so many bad Sci-Fi/Fantasy movies released during the same time period - anyone remember Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn? I actually remember seeing this piece of crap in the theatre in 3D no less - that would have been in '83. Richard Moll was one of the star actors in it and he went on to act in a couple of other stinkers before going back mostly to TV roles.

It's just that in 2001 every sequence means something, it has a storytelling purpose... the technical limitations they had back in the 60's lead them to do choices in order to have the best images on screen... the total opposite of nowadays CGI fest oriented crappy movies Hollywood regularly unloads in teenage brains all around the world.

One of the mottos of the 60's in term of design was : Less is More

It applies 100% (2001% should I say) to Kubrick's masterpiece.

Thanks JT ! We could say that the FELLI MEI is a combination of the 2001 ARIES shuttle and 1999 Eagle Transport in a certain way...

Cool

I remember seeing her in a few episodes of Sex & the City, she was awesome !

Don't forget the great Clarke Peters as "Ballard"... He was one of the leading actors in The Wire, a true TV series masterpiece imo.
