This sidkit was sent to me for TLC. It was already built and painted quite well but physically it didnt age well.
The most noticeable problem was that it was very loose, wonky and wobbly.
I've found that the biggest problem with these sidkits is that the fine thread metric screws supplied gum up and strip too easily and therefore only moderately perform the binding tasks for which they were employed.
I took out almost all of the 3mm socket screws and replaced them with 6-32 screws which have a much coarser thread pattern and are slightly larger.
I pinpointed all the loose spots and put a drop of super thin super glue in and tightened the bolts. This technique made the most dramatic difference in the trigger guard. I ran a drop of super glue in where it met the frame and now it wobbles no more.
The Steyr receiver was wobbly too. I milled off the two socket head screws that were molded in and replaced them with real ones. I also glued down the slots that attached it to the top rear of the bulldog.
The gun did have a lovely "worldcon" finish but there were some chips in the black and some bare spots in the gunmetal so I had to refinish the painted black parts and I darkened up the weathered metal parts with black stove polish of all things, worked a treat!
These pewter guns definitely have their own list of concerns you need to address and understand, but once you understand them things go pretty easy.
But damn... they're heavy...LOL

Nice work!
Either that front end cap got pushed out too far or the barrel got shortened, otherwise than that it looks damn fine. |

I've had similar problems with my own SidKit, but I think has been more due to me playing around with it than anything else. I'm probably not going to replace the couple of loose screws but instead use some LockTite on them (as you did with SuperGlue.) When I first built the kit, I played around with the bolt to loosen it up a bit (since it originally fit pretty tightly) but ended up over-doing it a tad and it stripped out the bolt retaining/tensioning screw. I posted about that in another thread and resolved that issue by using some heavy/viscous machine grease on the bolt and using a bit of pipe thread tape on the screw.
I'm having the same issue with the front screw that holds the Steyr receiver onto the Bulldog barrel, but I think I can fix it fairly easily by simply using a slightly longer screw - the original one supplied is barely long enough. Other than that I haven't had any real issues with it. I think the moral of the story is to appreciate it but not play around with it as though it were a toy. That's why I bought one of Rich's stunt castings...
And you're right, the SidKit is a TANK! I still really like it though... it's a great looking replica; I just wish I had had the money to get the WorldCon version too before Sid passed away.

A very nice job mate - as always your blasters look absolutely spot on!
I have to agree with all that's been said regrading the Sid. I've replaced a few of the screws in the grip but happily, mine was always fairly rattle free possibly because I very seldom handle it.
My only suggestion is to replace your current barrel with mspaw's lovely piece. I received mine a few days ago and its absolutely magnificent - and certainly adds that final touch to the blaster business end. I had to do a little reworking of the Sid frame to get everything to sit properly again and its now installed waiting on some weathering to match the rest of the worldcon finish.
BTW, the solid barrel and new screws and parts now have the entire blaster absolutely solid. Not a rattle or movement in the blaster anywhere...
If you thought the Sid was heavy before (mine has the steel mag as well), wait till the barrel is installed along with a full cylinder of inert rounds.
This is now a REAL blaster… LOL
Congrats again and cheers for sharing mate..
Kind regards

Probably among the best two or three Sids I can recall ever seeing here on Propsummit. Nice to see that with some perseverance, amazing results can be had. |

I'm sure that some improvements could be made in your capable hands.
I think it's time for an updated version of the BRB, perhaps a MkII, could be built. A snub nose or possibly CQB version.
Kinda similar to how the PPGs were done in Babylon 5 were.

I'm not sure about the slight taper forward on the Steyr magazine part is this correct?
Not much I can do about it on this particular build I'm just curious.

I am not sure about the taper on this either. It does look like the end cap/plug in the front of the Steyr should fit into the receiver deeper though. Not sure if this would have an effect on it or not depending on what is inside of the receiver there. It looks like it is fitting well every where else, but I don't see the taper you are talking about.

I think that this sidkit blaster was built by me ...for more shots of it check out my old postings and an old blaster build contest( been a few years now my memory is fuzzy)...I made that weaver knob myself out of the back of one of those lapel pins with the blinking lights , and the other worldcon touches and after I finished it sidkit came out with a worldcon versioon lol shoulda waited but I had fun being creative...still looks great ! _________________ I've seen things ....you people appear to be intrested in ... |

Good Catch Karl. I just deleted a few of his posts, but it took him him quoting me word for word to realize what he was up to. Say good bye to our friend Jerry...the spambot.

Woo hoo, I'm the 1000th view.
I wonder if that's part of the bot strategy, they infiltrate popular threads. Talk about beauty and the beast... Jerry's both. |
