Joberg:
That logo was a magnesium photo etched plate with the letters high and spaces low, deep etched...about 2, or 2 1/2 inches long. I ordered them myself and handed them to David L Snyder (art director). I sprayed the face with flat black paint and quickly wiped it clean on the face leaving the background black. Once it was dry a very fine metal grade sandpaper was used to create a horizontal grain, much like stainless steel. This look lasts only 30 days or so as it naturally gets cloudy or milky. I've used this technique on many movies. A clear spray would make it last longer but it glares in light, loses the delicate patina of stainless, and the camera guys hate that. _________________ I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... |

Thanks Tom for the trick- of- the- trade technique. Wow, I didn't know it was etched. When seeing screen caps, it seems like the logo was simply painted or airbrushed on the little protruding shelf.
What we're missing of course is good detailed pictures of the various props seen in the movie.
We knew that you guys went wild with the layering of "stuff" in this movie, but we didn't know to what extent.
It's humbling to us, when we see the amount of work that went into it for a second on the screen. |

Joberg:
When you see a scene like Deck touching the lens of the VK with his thumb you thank yourself for your extra effort (which was always expected on BR.)
And in dailies they showed multiple angles, changes in various takes and so much that doesn't appear in the final film. My buddy Steven Dane would count the logos and graphic shots every day for fun. You get a taste of this in Dangerous Days. So you don't know how close he's going to put the camera to the prop, or the face, or the windshield. So you give him fingerprint detail where he might need it.
Oh, just had a thought. I made up a sheet of hodge podge graphics Printed in many colors (a sheet 11x17) that was cut up in tiny stickers that was to be for the sole use of Ridley when he needed stickers to mess up a set and give it some busy realism. You can see some in the hall of the Snake Pit near Deck and the neon by his face. One was a wink to David L Snyder ,the art director, born in '44. See if you can find it next time.
Another place was on the VidPhon when Deck calls Rachel. You guys are artists so I guess you would do a good job with the stickers, but you'd be surprised how badly an un artistic prop master might muck up such a thing.
I think Rid spent an hour with the graffitti and stickers all over the screen and glass case while they lit the scene...oh, Sean was live vid on the other end of the stage..."I don't think so Mr Deckard." _________________ I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... |

Oh yes, the big Vid-Phones (yet another difficult prop to get); the Japanese published pics of the 4 Vid-Phone used in the movie and the work involved with the myriad of stickers affixed to them.
As you said, when you work with a Director like Ridley, you don't scrimp on quality.
I think that a lifetime is not enough to see all the details in BR. |

All of this is what makes return viewing so significant to designers and ADs, as well as other students of film.
I doubt it would ever be possible now, but it would be fascinating to see all of the various designs and artwork together. Just the gallery on "The Final Cut" Blu-ray set hints at the sheer volume of both used and unused graphics. It must have been staggering. It is on so many films of this genre now, but triply so on a Scott undertaking.
Thanks for the insights. - R13 _________________ Gosh, you've really got some nice toys here . . . |

Good one Dave As soon as the V.K. case project is done, I'll get back at paper props (it's been quite a while) and see what I can whip |

Yes, Joberg. With the proper clipart books in hand we should all have plenty of fodder with which to create and recreate, due to Tom's contributions.
I plan to re-tackle DORGON, if only to add a more exact replica of the original version to my collection. True to his word, Mr. Southwell has furnished us with more than we could hope for - the keys to 2019, as it were. Between the magazines and the signage and the cards, and with his stories and guidance, we have a world to work with now.
To alter that familiar saying here, I wouldn't have believed the things I've seen on Propsummit.
Mere "thanks" hardly seems adequate. - R13 _________________ Gosh, you've really got some nice toys here . . . |

Indeed, it seems that thank you doesn't convey our true feeling for what Tom did for us...saying that, you're right when you're saying that with all of these infos (the true ones, and not caps or earsay) we'll be able to go beyond and produce some good stuff. |

Thanks, Joberg. Since I try to use Uncommon Found Objects in these compositions, perhaps UFO is appropriate.
