It is a parachute cord survival bracelet woven to mimic the Browncoats patch seen in Firefly. You can see it on Captain Mal's shoulder in the lower left center of this picture:

A better shot of it can be found here: http://www.everettcomics.com/products-page/patches/serenity-firefly-browncoats-patch/

I highly recommended either picking it up on DVD or adding it to your Netflix queue. Or, the Science channel tends to run marathons of the show pretty regularly.

I've seen pics of the show and the famous gun also (+ it's with a popular Canadian actor in the lead role)...but if you'd pitch that show to a network, what would you say to sell it?

As Nathan Fillion said in the Halloween episode of his current show, Castle, from 2009 when he re-donned his Captain Mal costume, "Space Cowboy". I'd also draw similarities to Han Solo.

But you're right, that was part of its problem. From what I understand, it was given the green light under one administration at FOX, but had to be scheduled by another that didn't necessarily believe in it or know how to market it.

The biggest problem that he show had, though, was that Fox ran the episodes out of order. They didn't like the pilot episodes, where you were introduced to the cast (not enough action and they didn't like that the crew backed down in their confrontation with a criminal, Badger), and demanded that Joss write a new episode in one weekend or the show wouldn't be picked up. The result was the episode, "The Train Job", which they aired first. It opens with a bar fight and a really nice first shot of Serenity (the big action that the execs wanted), but the audience had no idea who these people were or what was going on. In fact, the pilot episodes were the last ones broadcast before the series was scuttled by Fox. Major fail on their part.

The fact that they also chose to schedule it for Friday night, not exactly a prime television viewing night, helped to seal its doom, too.
