I had the idea of making a Lawgiver prop based on the comic version. (Why does almost everybody focus on the Stallone one? For shame!) The Nerf Recon and Retaliator look like they would form a good basis for the Lawgiver Mk 2. Comparison picture time!

Interested to see how you're going to make the necessary transformations...I'll keep an eye on that one for sure |

Well, for one I'm not going to be afraid to adjust the design to fit the base. After all, even Dredd artists seem to use the Lawgiver design just as a general guideline. For instance, here's a variation that's currently at the title bar of 2000AD's official forums:

Yep, you got those Nerfs who are pretty close to the design you want to achieve...are you going to go for the "direct from the factory" look or the "I beat my gun everyday with various objects" look |

I prefer a clean look myself. I can understand that a scratched and banged up look is more complex and probably takes more workmanship, but I don't think a firearm should look like it regularly doubles as a hammer. |

I'm not all that enthused about the new movie version, at least as far as getting something like that myself. It just looks like a bulky submachinegun without the things that are common features of the Lawgiver in the comics, such as the ammo indicator light (I know there's a small text display on the movie version) or the thru-barrel sight on the back. |

On the new Dredd, the whole gun base is a Glock 9mm. They added a lot of parts to make it Sci-Fi...and it looks good |

I did see the video where they discussed the Lawgiver. It's interesting how they figured the different ammo types could fit in with two different magazines. |

I found a Nerf Retaliator being sold on eBay which was just the main pistol part of it. It's arrived, and I have to say I did not expect it to be quite the hulking beast it is. Oh well, that does suit the Lawgiver. I'll have to check around on where I might be able to pick up a six-dart clip by itself.
edit: I opened it up to see how well I could do that and to take a look at the internals, and I just have to say: Damn is this thing well secured! You have to remove fifteen screws to take the outer casing off, and there's a couple more screws holding the internals in place.
I think I'll veer away from the above design as far as the ammo indicator goes, to avoid making this thing even more unwieldy. Maybe I'll adopt the design from the game:

I just noticed the game design has not been forgotten. This is from the iGadget game Judge Dredd vs Zombies released within the last year:
