Being stronger and more resilient than their human counterparts, the Nexus 6 replicants were harder to stop (kill) and conventional ammunition was insufficient. In order to acquire licensing to develop and build these replicants, Tyrell Corporation not only had to develop built in fail safes, their weapons technology division had to create ammunition capable of stopping them.

Here's a photo comparing the "new, improved" ammo compared to the standard ammo.

Here's a closeup. The ammo is self powered, creating the telltale glow you see here. The glow tells the officer that the ammo is active. The rounds are safe to carry in speedloaders or loose in the pocket. They are not armed until fired, and the spin imparted as the projectile travels down the barrel activates the internal arming process.

Was just writing into a story line about how all ammo now has a radioactive signature in it, so when the police show up not only could they find where all the rounds went, and from who's guns, but also track the sales of it. I used it as part of the story too that is how the hero was tracked, by his unspent rounds still on his possession. These really fit the bill.

Admittedly, I was inspired by the glowing bullets that came with my Samaritan. Was not sure the circuitry could be built to fit inside a .44 cartridge. I thought we could hollow out a speedloader, but the engineer had my sample speedloader 3D printed, with a hollow core that contains the batteries and circuitry. You activate the lights through conduction by simply touching the base of one of the rounds. Genius.
