BeastMaster,
Finally, what was on the reverse of the card? Was it anything close to this sketch?
These were the prototype cards we presented to Mr Scott.
Bell Telephone allowed us to use their mark ( but not on the cards).
So that was changed. The Wright card needed the red addition which I
need to find for you. The backs were as presented here.
My sketch (you posted) is close to the final card.

joberg,
This is a paper print of my VidPhon face plate. After a film positive
of this was made, a series of red details was added with translucent
red tape (to the back) as seen in the photo with Deck. A question comes up...
"Why do the Japanese get less instructions?" (Sounds like the start
of a racist joke, which wasn't intended). I had translation problems
like this all the time but with no time to get too fussy.

You see the uniformed cops wearing. My prop master on Disturbia was
On the crew in BR and he wore a uniform in the Union Station police
sequence and his face is on one of the I.D. cards I see on the web.
He may have sold his wallet. He is in no hurry to talk to fans. |
Was that Art Shipee by any chance?

What do you think? |
I think we pointed that out here at one point. Yes, I even go back some of my old design back when I worked for Brownlie Design and College at RIT , and see how prescient I was, especially on the rejected stuff.

Now that is really cool! It was great to see the sketch of the back of the key card but this is the holy grail shot
Was this card printed onto paper? Or was there more of a complex method to its construction? _________________ "F*ck it, it's just a movie. Let him worry about it" Harrison Ford |

Thanks Tom, maybe Mike Fink has some info on those?
Edit: Did you also do the graphics on that half wheel that is a kind of "pull-out" at the left-hand side of the V.K.? |

Andy,
I may have the data somewhere on the size of the VP but it wasn't on those prints...I'll look again.
The original drawings of record were sent to the Blade Runner Partnership
Upon the close of the art department. These prints were copies. The originals had dimensions and tech details.
BeastMaster,
Thanks for your flattering remarks.
But "Holy Grail" ? Hmmmmmm.
I worked with the guy who designed The Godfather.
I worked with the guy who designed Cleopatra, and Hello Dolly,
and the guys who designed and built the mother ship in CE3K.
So , forgive me, that card is not the holy Grail. Oh, come to think of it,
I worked with some of the Monty Python and the holy ....
Well you get me. No disrespect to you.
Joberg,
I guess you have Syd Meads sketches on the personal VP.
And this side note:
Let me make a comment about what some think is a waste of money and
detail within Blade Runner. The script discovers Deck buying a newspaper
at the corner magazine stand and he crosses the street to duck out of the rain
by the noodle bar, where he waits for a seat and the blimp passes
overhead. Yes they shot all that. So Ridley needed magazines that would be
seen in Deck's close ups. The fact that things get cut to make the movie flow
correctly is the nature of film.

Tom, I don't have the Mead's sketches on the V.P. I never saw sketches or blue-prints of those personal V.P. We don't know who built those
It's true, that we, as humans and fans, we tend sometimes to focus on a particular of that movie and yes, for us it's like the Holy Grail of paper props, or physical props, etc...and we can only imagine the life experience you had, as a pro in the industry, working alongside so many talented people.
So the expression is simply that, finally, the last missing piece of the puzzle is in place and that we...well... know |

Probably not. I don't remember doing it and don't have a sample of it,
However I'm not sure because people came into my office several
Times a day needing something and I might have to whip something
Up right there on the spot. But...
Probably not.

BeastMaster,
You may have noticed the text on the BACK of the
apartment card was "flopped", or mirror view.
This was probably fixed in the final. Some of
these elements most likely came from a FORMAT catalog. Not sure about
the Japanese. (Can you try to get that translated for me please.) It may
say something like: order information call ...
This added graphic (dont know what it says) was made into a custom
Letraset type rub-on that was a milky red, not unlike Campbells tomato
soup (see Andy Warhol). This card was made of a mylar type substance
that could be printed using black, white and tones and even halftones if a
photo was needed. Jack Neville made a front, a back, and a spacer,
and stuck them all together with double stick tape.

|
|
Please notice the gold foil. This was assembled by Jack Neville in the
same manner I listed above, with the colors showing through the film
positive of my design. When CineFantastique printed this in the BR
issue of their mag. they failed to take a photo first and just
disassembled the card to make their separations...but the
gold was flat (harvest) and some of the rings ended up the
wrong color. This could help to detect fan made items.
The back of this card (posted earlier) has something that most likely
came from a Japanese graphics magazine
(where you could order by phone).
I think Ridley said we wouldn't see it. _________________ I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... |

This is Art Shippee, prop man, police man extra, and now prop master.
And that's a real genuine I.D. card.
