Here is the latest model I have started with Bassnoir, a very large size Space jockey derelict. He is the creative inspiration behind this project... and anyone who actually owns real Giger stuff has my attention!. So we decided to go in on this project and I finally get around to getting this finished and available for casting.

basically here I have carved out the shape of the ship, going by the giger painting and transforming it to 3D. I blended in perspectives from the Studio model just a bit for the proportions, and It is really taking shape. I have a bit of carving and shaping left to do, and then it gets covered and layered in fiberglass and metal conduits. The actual model will be about 29" long, very large, and It will be available as a large foam casting with resin skin.
It will be made from SMOOTH-ON resin and Aeromarine expanding foam inside to give it a stiff rigid core. Light enough to prop up the horns in a crash Diorama

Thanks joberg, coming from a modeling madman such as yourself is a real compliment.
I am scheming up ideas for the dome...so far on the other derelicts the domes are wrong.. but actually there is one that was produced that looked pretty good. I forgot it's manufacturer, but the only problem is that is lacked the weird curves and thus looked kinda "man made", but detail wise it was great! I think it was about 11" or something like that.

Congrats Clutch, you win the first half of the Giger Rorschach test!

seriously..... you are right. the derelict is a composite from a Dune painting, the discarded pyramid from ALIEN and combined into basically is shoulders and head of a being with one outstretched arm holding a pistol, and one arm holding an inward pointing hammer. If the derelict is looked at from the top, it resembles a pair of legs, with the entrance (well you can figure that one out for yourself ) But a very "VENUS FLYTRAP" concept... just amazing and foreboding design.

Giger is just pure Genius... I cannot get enough of his work..

Last night between building another Nostromo and doing this derelict (keeps the monotony at bay) I started to form the outgrowths on the derelict. for anyone here interested in how I am doing this, because this master will be a model for display, I am having to cover it in fiberglass. First step is over the foam core adhere thin aluminum foil so the fiberglass will not eat the foam..then apply carefully strips of glass cloth, then two coats of polyester resin.

The next step is to sand the parts with a power sander (sounds intense i know ha ha) and then apply polyester filler over that to get a smooth finish after finalizing the shapes.

Here is more roughing in of the major components.

That looks good! How are you going to put the details in? Guitar cords, greeblies and the likes?

Right joberg, here will be a combination of K&S precision metals.. i.e. aluminum and soft copper tubing of various diameters, and I will restring my guitar and use many of the strings for this as well ( I have needed a reason to restring it for months now THe parts that get assembled are two tips on the front, and the pods on each arm. THe entrances I will cast and then replicate for six on the front, and then a frosted weird dome will go on top.
I am hoping in 10 days or so I can have the model ready for detailing... if all goes well/

Today the materials arrived courtesy of Bassnoir, and so here is close to $400 in SIlicon, mother-mold material, resin, expanding foam, and other assorted supplies.

I have been told that smooth-on is better than what I was using, So I went ahead and ordered from my local distributor in Hollywood. I have never tried Smooth-On, but everyone says it is top notch.

Good stuff JTP...not only I use guitar strings but also fishing whires and cooked spagetti ...yeah; smooth-on is the product to use: every detail will be captured faithfully.

Here I am shaping the "outgrowths" on the arm that I will just refer to as the "pistol".
I apply several layers of polyester filler, sand, and leave some indented patches un-sanded as it looks like a chunks of "coating" that has fallen off. I am adding asymmetrical panels on the raised surfaced and the large "arms" of this ship.

Based on the movie, the Space Jockey Derelict is between 10,000 to 1.5 million years old. This is only logical as fossilization of any form take this much time, and in celestial time, it would be almost impossible in a cosmic scale of time that the two civilization would cross paths if the derelict were only there a couple hundred yearsThe chances almost nil.

Even though this ship is intact, I imagine there must be some wear in whatever "alien" form of wear would happen to a ship that was basically "grown" and then outfitted for interstellar flight. I am starting to get some shape out of this model, and things are starting to come together as far as the details under all of the conduits and "machinery"

Well JT, since you'd mentioned that the plans for an 11 foot Nostromo was in the pipe, why not make the Derelict ship the same as the studio size used in the movie?

Tonight I worked several hours on this maddening design, every angle one looks at is it appears different, not only in the studio model but in the movie, so I kept going back to the Giger paintings for reference to get it right.

There is solace found in the obsession of this particular spacecraft apart from the tedious and almost never ending sanding and shaping. This by far is the most complex shape I have ever done. I have the command section pretty much finished, and next the area where the horns get blended into the hull get epoxy and fiberglass for strength. I hope in the next few days to have the whole thing ready for all the conduit and detail application.

Thanks guys!

I am starting to make some progress now, but joberg was right..detailing it is a killer.

I have stripped my guitars of strings completely (guess it was time to restring them anyway)
used a lot of copper super thin rod, and so far hundreds of special "seamstress pins"

half of these pins I must cut the heads off and fashion tiny clips, and the other half I use in tandem uncut to install the conduits the way the derelict was created in the movie using nails.. pretty much the same, just on a smaller scale.

This is now three days of detailing, and ones fingers tend to ache from bending and pushing tiny pins, But the result is starting to look pretty close in my opinion. In this pic I have about 50% of the detail done in this one area...I will interweave some smaller conduits into it to match the diagonal details on the large studio derelict. I threw on some colored gradients of different colored primer for fun and to give myself an idea how far I need to for with detailing for a painted model to look decent.
