A new thread devoted to details you've noticed in (or about) Blade Runner (and maybe other films, as well)...

Let's start with this one :

Do you recognize the guy on the left ? This motherfucker looks like a young version of Dr Tyrell...

The more I look at those 2 pictures, the more I think it was intented since the very begining to have Tyrell reminding us of this guy...

thats him - Joeseph Goebbels.

even though i studied the 3rd Reich as part of my undergrad history degree, i never thought about the likeness between Tyrell and Goebbels...

one endeavored to create artificial beings and the other tried to destroy real ones.

I remember my first year at the Academy, one of the seniors had a paper on display that document all the visual styles used in BR, and the excerpt I read was drawing parallels between Tryrell's visual motifs and the motifs used by Nazi Germany.

I agree... Tyrell apartments are ART DECO, 99% close to the 3rd Reich (and USSR) architecture and design... THE design of totalitarism.

The "funny" thing is that one of the 3rd Reich main goals was to create an über mensch who would become the new master of mankind... in Blade Runner, the über mensch was finaly created, but to serve mankind as a slave !

You're right, from BR to Brazil or Dark City, the architecture is a character in the movie and respects the Roman/Art-Deco/USSR type of design. The main themes and effects of this particular style is to crush and oppress the spectator: i.e. the power of the state translated into concrete...

According to Michael Deeley, the very first draft of the script describes Deckards relationship with Rachel as like a Nazi falling in love with a Jewish person that they were supposed to be cleansing. Hope this is not offensive to anyone, but it just seemed interesting with the earlier post on how Tyrell looks like Joeseph Goebbels.

Did you know that Syd Mead took inspiration in the works of Raymond Loewy for the design of the (deleted, alright) hospital room set ?

Mead actualy worked for Loewy's studios (as a freelance illustrator, I guess), you can see 2 or 3 of his Concorde aircraft interior illustrations in DESIGN INDUSTRIEL (INDUSTRIAL DESIGN in english), a 1979 artbook devoted to Loewy's works... (I like Loewy's work a lot)

Here is the book cover (french version, but same as the US one) and a Mead painting featured on page 243 of this book :

Here is a design study for a bed aboard the Skylab space station by Loewy's studios (page 213 of DESIGN INDUSTRIEL) :

And now (just above), a rejected Mead design for the hospital bed (as featured in OMNI's SCREEN FLIGHTS / SCREEN FANTASIES, page 210)

Pretty close "blanket" designs, don't you think ?

Did you see that the ceiling tile in the hospital room look a lot like the ones in the Nostromo(main computer room called ''Mother'')?

I think IIRC that pieces of the alien set were used. The shape of the room reinforces the similarities as well as the lighting. After watching the deleted scenes a few times I am beginning to really like the hospital scenes. I am amazed on how many scenes that would have added a lot to character development were taken out of the movie.

MOTHER / MUTHUR room was displayed at the Egyptian theatre for the release of the movie in 1979, if I recall well some of the ALIEN QUADRILOGY DVD featurettes... BUT I really think none of it's panels were used in the Hospital room...

Look at both screencaps below. Although the hospital room recalls a lot of MUTHUR / MOTHER room in A L I E N, the cellings don't look similar at all...

Okay... Another (funny) one...

Here are a few screencaps of the Spinner cockpit being filmed during production. Look closely at the small led screens in front of the pilot... See them ? What do you read, then ?

HELLO on the left one.
RIDLEY on the right one.

Same panels but minus the lights. You know how Ridley likes to use same designs or recycling images (PURGE on the Spinner's screen, Kubrick's extra reels for the end of the movie, etc...)

Of course, we've all noted this a long time ago !

But did you notice the re-used A L I E N sounds in BLADE RUNNER ? No ? Here is one :

The "background sound" heard in this scene of A L I E N (Brett and Parker on their way to Dallas' briefing about special order 2037) is also heard in this scene of BLADE RUNNER (first appearance of Roy Batty. He and Leon then go to visit Chew).

I think that another A L I E N "background sound" was used in Deckard's appartment scenes, if I remember well what I've read in FUTURE NOIR... Could someone confirm this ?

Great !
So, would you please tell us where to find the A L I E N sound re-used in Deckard's apartment ??? (haven't identified this one, yet)

Thanks !

The sound of the lights swooping through Deckard's apartment IIRC.
