Hello folks
I thought I would share this with you. May already be known by some. I fell over this "Tap Bar" at a stall and was immediately struck by the obvious comparison. Clearly not the same version but the same size. I would conclude that there was a tap bar or two drilled, milled and wired to make the original.

A good candidate for sure.
There are a couple threads concerning the sight rod that you may find interesting. |

Interesting...worth investigating to see if there's other kind of designs out there. |

Thing is it is so very easy to knell a part..and to make those cuts and taper..why fight a made part when it can just be turned out??
The hard part is the four length wise cuts.

Hi rich
Yes, I hear what you're saying but as I have learnt from talking to other professional prop makers and something I am sure you are only too well aware of yourself; inspiration comes from iinteresting items found or saved in the workshop. This sidebar has so many similar features to the tap bar that it clearly wasn't just made from scratch. I think it is clear that the tap bar was at the very least the inspiration behind the sight rod or perhaps was used as a starting point. It is also hollow, which makes wiring possible.
Joberg; yes, there are many out there of different sizes and designs. I am thinking that there is one out there that is the same length and the four grooves were added and it was tapered or perhaps two different were joined together and them modified. Who knows?! |

It's quite possible that you're on the right track. there have been many theories on the origin of the sight rod.
Have a look through those older threads. I started one myself. Vintage dental tools have the same characteristics and are hollow as well as being longer and they vary greatly in style and design.
There are many places from which the inspiration may have come. |
