Thans for all the support guys! I'll be honest I've had so many close calls already, I think I age a year every time I sit down at the bench. Today's was a slip of the torch while doing some fiddling with how the bolt lever sits in the cylinder cover. I accidentally touched the inner cone to the surface of the lever and melted a teeny little pit out of it
After I recovered from that shock, I went back in and did as much as I dared to do. Then I went to town with the dremel on everything.
I guess that stuff's still hard, lol.
Anyhow, I think it's gonna work out!
Whoa!! |

Fit the mag housing today, and tweaked a few other small things for better fit
Couldn't help myself from throwing on some extra Tomen hardware when I got home.

Wrappin my head around this barrel.
Thought it was 9/16-28 at first, buuuuuut it appears to be .578-28 or 37/64-28, which Fusion doesn't have a thread preset for so I left it 9/16 for the renders ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Finally starting to get to a place where I feel comfortable taking a crack at this for real, though! |

Lol, I just mean that I haven't actually made any cuts yet. It took me a while to figure out the threading, since it's not really common outside of gunsmithing. I didn't want to waste any of my barrel blank until I was sure. If I have time I might actually sit down at the lathe this week, though |

Great work! Well done. I too made the discovery that the bolt lever had been bent and re-curved on the original and had to go through what you're going through. Nervous as hell as I remember.
Looks like you are doing a great job and the result will be amazing. Stay calm and know when to walk away from it and take a break!
Cant wait to see the end result! |

Nice work! Having a blaster from original parts with your own custom serial is as good as it gets _________________ "F*ck it, it's just a movie. Let him worry about it" Harrison Ford |

Thanks guys! I scheduled some time on a lathe this weekend, so we'll see how that goes
In the meantime, I did a tiny bit of work today.
The M4x4 grubs I have would only screw halfway in, so I had to go in there with a tap and cut a little further. The gunmetal was super hard, and scary to tap. Hopefully they were actually M4... well if they weren't before, they are now! |

Learned a lot of hard lessons about working with stainless steel this weekend. Once I got my feeds & speeds mostly figured out, I blew through half my stock because I didn't measure things right, and my diameters were off : /
fitting a barrel... jeez it's not easy. Well, I'm sure for a professional gunsmith it is, but as a hobbyist there's a learning curve for sure. First you need to make sure you're centered off the bore of the barrel blank, otherwise it won't align with the cylinder. Then you need to adjust your cylinder gap (space between protruding barrel and the cylinder) or you'll be spitting lead out the sides. Then you need to cut your forcing cone... it's so much work. I predict that I will end up having to make at least one more before I get something that checks out 100% : /
I had enough stock to make one, though, which I left about .3" too long so I have plenty of room to adjust the shoulder & cylinder gap after the threads are cut. The chamfer isn't correct, because I was just messing around (the business end is going to get trimmed, once I know the barrel fits).
I also salvaged a chunk of practice barrel stock I had, but only managed to get a 3.9" barrel out of it. I'm going to use it as my guinea pig for threading & drilling/tapping for the receiver.
This would be so much easier if I decided to make it for display only
Onward, ho! |
