Well folks the tile project is dead in the water (( I received a fax from the manufacture's ''design & new products'' and they basically told me that for them to do the tiles would be only profitable if:
1. I pay for the development of the mould(s) : $4500.00.
2. I agree of a run of a minimum of 20.000 tiles!
3. I sign a waver saying that the design is an original.
Failure to agree to those major points and they will not produce anything!
If anybody has a better idea (cheaper) let's hear it 'cause I'm a little down right now... |

Let's try to be constructive, shall we?
I have PM'd joberg and offered assistance if he is interested,
I would expect this project is contingent upon everyone's interest.
I'm talking about the 16" X 16" variety of tile here...
Waiting to hear back! |

As I said to O.B. I'm looking into making the tile as a vacu-formed project. My local plastic manufacturer is quoting the production made out of a fairly cheap plastic sheet: 8'x4' is $15.00.
I'm stuburn and will not stop until I find a solution acceptable to everyone. |

SWEET!
This is a gaping hole in my collection. I would be in to several of these. Possibly enough for a wall.

Well folks, since I bought a house 5 days ago and will officially move in on the 12th of April, my tile project as well as the V.K. machine will remain on the back burner for a while...hopefully to resume sooner than later. I will have to re-evaluate the tile project as well and decide if I could make them myself. We'll see. |

I was having vacation on Shanghai - China and on this monday I was sitting on taxi to get People's Park. Traffic was jammed, which isn't big suprise on Shanghai. In one street corner my taxi was stopped and then my eyes got something familiar...
My hands trembled and quickly I got camera into my hands and shot few times. Then my journey did continue, but I have had placed into my memory where I saw it.
Yes, the chinese Ennis-House tile replicas!!
Later I came back into same place and took more close-up pictures. As you can see it's not accurate, but very nice. Made of concrete, about 4 cm thick. Did try to get one as souvenir, but it was too well fastened.
Asked locals do they know can I buy these from anywhere. They had no idea. Just told me I can get any design wanted if just pay for it. There is plenty of handcraftworkers who can do anything. Concrete tile isn't easiest souvenir to bring on luggage. Atleast cannot take many of them.
Tiles did cover only this small corner section of building. Didn't find it anywhere else. Very strange.
For those who visit Shanghai. Go into corner of Hankou Lu / Fujian Lu. It might also be on Fuzhou Lu. |

I recently went to a gallery show of black and white photographs of Havana. The photographer is Barry Goyette and the shot is titled "El Capitolio, Habana":
http://www.sloart.com/images/products/Cap.jpg
Just a car parked in front of a building. But what's on those walls? Rather like Ennis tiles?
Here's a close up, unfortunately the original image isn't of great resolution.
So how did those get there?

Received an e-mail from Scott (Kropserkel) with new pricing for vacu-form tiles (and an ABS more sturdy version).
Check his site.
P.S. The tile has the little square at the bottom right-hand side. As you all well know, the BR tile has that square at the left instead. |

I am a new member and greatly appreciate all of your posts on this topic
I recently decided to order the tiles from Kropserkel
when I asked about the tiles I got this response
Thanks for your continued interest in these tiles.
High Impact Poly Styrene has less resistance to ultra violet rays, meaning that if it is unpainted, it may yellow sooner than ABS would.
This point would be moot if you were planning on painting/finishing the tiles to suit your decor. ABS also has a higher impact resistance, and is more prone to
be pliant (bend) before it would crack. HIPS has a more matte finish, ABS is glossy and more suitable if you were wanting to leave the panels unfinished. Other than
these features, there isn't significant differences between them for this purpose. We use ABS to form body armour panels because of their higher durability in kinetic applications.
We can also offer the bevelled blanks that are used to accent these tiles in 16" X 16", and also have masters for 8" X 8" versions of both also. The eight inch tiles are yet to be tested in the vacuum forming process (gauges for detail). Please let me know if you have any other questions, and I hope to be of service to you.
Thanks again.
I ordered 4 of the ABS type for $ 140.00 shipped
on a different topic anyone know where I can get a replica set of the
different prominent photos in the film
thanks |

Welcome Bcbiker. I hope you'll enjoy your tiles, thanks again for sharing info about them...you'll like it here (maybe not your wallet) but that goes with the hobby. Looking forward for some pics in the future. |

Welcome Bcbiker.
Beastmaster might have some photos left over from a previous run?
Also, you could print your own. That's what i did.
If you search the forums there are some files around with high-res versions of the photo's that some members have kindly uploaded.
Hope this helps. |
