That's interesting. What kind of marking are they ? Something used on aircrafts maybe ? Could you please post a scan of them ?

Is it that, what my eyes would call yellow, ESD warning label (CAUTION etc etc) at the bottom of the lid? _________________ 26354 |

Brilliant resource, Phil!
But surely, looking at this picture:

Surely the two large, square British and two small American ESD labels at the top are a different colour than the oblong British label at the bottom?
(Interesting historical information, in those labels: it seems America was using their own warning symbol for ESD back in those days. The one in the British labels has since become the global standard.) _________________ 26354 |

I think the reason for the colour difference is that the lower label was created as part of the original artwork and that after the panel was finished they applied the paper labels when somebody probably commented that it looked a bit bare in the corners.
The reason for the colour difference is that the panel was probably a piece of clear Perspex with the black image screen printed on the rear face, with colour achieved using pieces of lighting gel held in place with tape.
The problem is no gel is that bright and they would have just used the brightest colour available to them.
It’s so much simpler today - design on the computer and have it printed on light diffusing film.
When they say they don’t like it just alter the artwork and print it again. Easy! |

They still seem to have used the exact artwork inside the frame from the 845x375mm label you posted, though.
I'm thinking though that the orange background of the four upper corner labels is the odd one out in this context. The yellow background is what you'd usually find in these labels — just look here, for instance.
Question is however, were these labels found items, or did the production just screen print found artwork?
- If the former, one wonders if not both background colors would have been available on stickers even at the time.
- If the latter, one wonders why? Why not create "in-world" artwork, instead of going through the trouble of reproducing artwork that is totally out of context...
Bearing in mind that the yellow background seems to be an exact match for the yellow text, just like the orange backgrounds are an exact match for the orange text, wouldn't it seem likely that both colours were done the same way; either as stickers or with gels?
I do wonder though if it actually was a Perspex panel, and not just opaque artwork on a solid surface... It seems to me that the panel is not back lit, but rather just lit by the recessed lights on four sides: notice how the surface, regardless of whether it is black or has artwork on it, is brightest closest to the edges, and how the illumination falls off towards the centre, or where the edge lights do not reach (like the small American labels on top). _________________ 26354 |

The labels they used were definitely printed for the production.
They're on a sheet size 227mm x 177mm and there are ten different labels.
The ones you buy today (and probably back then) are sold in rolls of individual labels.
There's also quite a lot of the sheet which isn't printed.
I'm assuming they used some of this to produce the arrows around the equipment in the tray.
Regarding the colour, it may be that they didn't have a self adhesive label sheet in yellow or that they were considered just too bright to be scattered about the sets.
Sadly I don’t think we'll ever know.
I hate to admit it but I think your right about the panel not being back lit.
I've always been convinced it was.

The colours are quite noticeable which is something that wouldn't happen without illumination.
Also, the panel is set quite far back into the lid which means there wouldn't be enough room for the fluorescent tubes.
I'm glad I didn't spend any money on producing an illuminated panel! |

Yes, the neon tubes on the sides of the lid might give the false impression that the panel was back-lited...no such thing as you, and others have discovered along the years. |
