First McQuarrie and then Jean Giraud This is not a good year.
Another great who leave us. I grew up in Brussels reading a lot of comic books (Bandes Dessinées) from the early Tintin (my Father's collection)and many others too numerous to list.
But one of my favourite was Gir: Lieutenant Blueberry was a revelation, not only the story but also the great drawings and mise-en-scène of every frame...it was certainly a radical departure of "la ligne claire" so present in Tintin and other Belgian/French artists. Very dynamic and to a certain extend copied from the American style of the early Flash Gordon, Prince Valiant and others(in his early years, Giraud's apprenticeship was with Jijé, another Belgian artist influenced by the Red Rider character and drawings).
Today I'll be in my favourite chair re-reading some of my favourite Gir/Moebius stories...TFS Fred. |

I heard these horrible news on morning. Makes me very sad. Illustrator who had great impact on scifi-culture. Most talented artist with his voyages to the surreal worlds of Arzach, Incal... many others. I been lucky to see some of Giraud's original works. That has been magical moment to me.
RIP Jean Giraud. Thank You for giving us so much. |

A very sad new,... Jean Giraud was a giant in the world of 'Bande-Dessinée'.
I had the chance to meet him several times in the BD festival of Angoulème in France where he made me some nice drawings i kept preciously.
I first discovered him as Moebius in the late 70's with wonderfull pieces like 'L'homme est-il bon ?' 'Arzach' and the tremendous 'Major Fatal'...and of course in the revolutionary sci-fi magazine 'Métal Hurlant' (heavy metal).
Every one of us remember about 'The long tomorow' a short story with Dan O' Banon...which is considered to be one of the influences for Ridley on our beloved movie !
And yes JB !...Blueberry is a masterpiece for us BD lovers !
Doctor Gir and Mister Moeb was a great artist _________________ I know what you're thinking...did he fire six shots or only five ?
Well to tell you the truth, in all the excitement i kind of lost track myself... |

It's a great loss for the world of art and cinema.
I was surprised today to find many young people didn't know who Moebius was. Yet, they all know if his art style through all the movies that included his designs (some times uncredited) I would date to say he invented the look of modern Science Fiction.
You can see his influence in Alien, Blade Runner and many more great movies. _________________

Like Tron and The Abyss. A major loss indeed. |

According to his wife Isabelle, Moebius' last words were "I feel something's happening... I feel that I'm transmuting... You've got to give me the fixing codes..."

Thanks Fred for that...great msg to his wife. I never visited the Cimetiere Montparnasse; is it better/similar to Le Pere Lachaise? (I saw that one). |
